Anybody know why the brake shoes would wear out. I never use my handbrake (If it is in park it's parked!) but with the last service I was told that the brake shoes (not pads) needed replacing. I know for a fact that the handbrake has not been up since the last service and probably not the since the last two services. So how is it that it is now worn out?

Hi Lock,
So questions:
1. Did they really wear out (did you see them?) or is it like windscreen wipers that the stealers just change anyway?
2. If they really did wear out and you don't use them then they must surely have been incorrectly adjusted. Follow the workshop manual - jack the rear wheel up, slacken off the adjuster at the handbrake lever, adjust at the start wheel in the hub until they just bind then back off a couple of clicks. Repeat with 2nd rear wheel then tension up the handbrake lever adjustment so that it does not add any pressure when fully down.

: ) Strangely enough I do need wiper blades!
Thinking about getting the silicone jobbies. They come in all colours. I have my eye on a Bright Blue set (Please forgive me, but it matches SWMBO's eyes...)

What the stealers say they do and what they do might be three different things, IMHO.
But, these shoes to "disintegrate" when they get sufficient dust / mud inside them. Acts like grinding paste.
There's a thread on the 4x4 community with pics of what it looks like inside, full of mud. (Sorry, cant find the thread)

Maybe the reason that they get full of mud and stuff is that on the rare occasion that the stealers DO adjust the handbrake at the wheels they probably never put the rubber covers for the star adjusters back - Go on, check yours, they are probably missing.KaiV wrote:But, these shoes to "disintegrate" when they get sufficient dust / mud inside them. Sorry about the slow reply, was battling to get uploads to work.
If you look at the diagrams you will see that the shaft of the adjuster runs horizontally along the inside of the lower part of the wheel backing plate. The adjuster hole is probably about 15mm dia and is offset to one side of 6 o'clock and in line with the adjuster shaft. horizontal axis.
I hope this helps?

Thank you very much. Will go n check it out in the morning
Correction - it is not a circular hole, it is a slot with rounded ends.
At the bottom of the backing plate at 6o,clock there is a slotted drain. Above that and just forward of it is the slot for the star wheel adjustment.
If your paj is similar to mine then the part code for the rubber plug is 52955B and the part number is MB618205. You can see it here
Hi Andrew,
Busy with rear breaks on my GLX, the rubber plug are not available from dealers, no stock in warehouse. Any ideas on an alternative to plug the holes?
