Do you know if there is any way to tell if an Amc head was fitted or if its still the standard Mitsubishi head?
Ai, this doesn't bode well, but all ain't lost. Let's assume your assessment on face value, botch job on sealing the tappet cover. My advice would be to clean the motor up and do the tapper cover seal properly. Remember that if the head is the problem, symptoms will either continue or be severe, which you would have picked up on already! Once clean, you can identify the root of the problem, if any exists - you can only fix what is evidently broken.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions yet. Normally any issues on the head reveals itself rather evidently; water loss, smoke, power loss, oil loss, water and oil mixtures, oil or water leaks. If the head is gone, its gone, if uncertain, drive sedately and go for an inspection at a head specialist - they do all the normal inspection type checks, but also do specialized checks, i.e. CO2 in the water, etc. If the head has an issue, just replace it with an AMC head. Pressure test of the head is close to 2k already, and even if done, there might be hairline cracks inside which they can't detect, and secondly, those heads are so hard, they are nigh impossible to skim. The head is really the only weak point of the 4M40 motor, if looked after, you can easily run 100's of 1000's of miles

If you want to know if you already have an AMC head, I would advise to visit a head specialist who installs AMC heads and ask them, of the cuff I don't know the external differences. HeadZone in Brackenfell sells them and confirmed all the above when I had to make tough choices 12 months ago.
Re: My Pajero story
I've already cleaned the motor off and it doesnt look like the tappet cover is leaking so im inclined to leave the gasket sealer alone.

As regards the head being blown, i dont think theres anything to worry about just yet, but I'll be keeping my eye on the water level and temp gauge as a matter of course. High mileage diesels didnt get a bad rep for no reason

Re: My Pajero story
Not sure if the 4M40 head design is similar to the 4M41 in terms of the injector pipes routing through the side of the head. If so (and especially if that head has been off or the injectors have been removed and refitted) the rubber seals where the injector pipes go through the side of the head may be leaking.
Re: My Pajero story
Thanks I'll add that to the list of things to check
Re: My Pajero story
So disaster struck the other day. The Pajero cut out while my wife was driving it, battled to restart, and when it did was down on power.

I couldn't figure out what the problem was, and after recent discussions about cylinder heads, I had visions of top end rebuilds. As this was above my pay grade as a desk jockey, I called up the mechanic.

One day later i get a call from him to say that he had stripped and checked everything, and can find nothing wrong. Head is fine, turbo is fine, and no vacuum leaks. He suspects that we had picked up some sort of contamination when we filled up recently, and replaced the diesel filter. R300 later i was on my way.

Im glad i can report a happy ending to the story at least, with my faith being restored in the car. More importantly i have found an honest mechanic who will only charge for what he actually fixes/replaces.
