3.2 DiD Engine Broken
Hi all!

A happy and blessed 2015 to each and everyone!

So my Paj lost power, started smoking and vibrating heavily! My mechanic did a compression test and found that there is a hole in piston no.1.

My mechanic feels that I should just buy a good second hand engine instead of repairing the old engine. He is of the opinion that 50PPM diesel is the culprit. He says because of the lower lubricity of the 50PPM the fuel pump clogged the injectors, which changed the spray pattern, which caused higher temperatures and caused the hole. He suggests that if I have the engine repaired, the injectors should also be refurbished as well as the fuel pump, but that would cost more than a good second hand engine.

So my question is, where do I find a good second hand engine??

My Paj is a 2006 3.2 DiD GLX LWB Auto.

Any constructive comments are welcome and appreciated!

Hi Superairborne

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, I wish I had some sage advice for you...

I recon if you could get a verified low-ish mileage 3.2DiD unopened(factory) motor, I would go for that. Unfortunately it seems that they are like hens teeth though and also that the motors are never the same once opened up.

What mileage did your Pajero have on it when the engine packed up? I am sure all of us with older 3.2 DiD's are concerned with this growing trend with the 4M41 motor...

Re: 3.2 DiD Engine Broken
It is sad to hear about a Di-D breaking down.

If you can get a sub-assembly somewhere, do it, but be warned that they are both scarce and expensive.
Get a good workshop with diesel experience to quote you on a re-build.

For you (and all other diesel engine owners):
Without opening the 2-stroke oil (2SO) debate again, consider using 2SO at 1:200 in your diesel.
It seems to prevent clogging up of injectors, and reduce carbon build-up on other components as well (valves, ports, piston tops).
Use it, or lose it!

Hi Nick

My Pajero only has 164000km on the clock. I was expecting such a hefty breakdown only about 100000km later.

Eish, that doesn't bode well for me, I am sitting on 250k km now...

I found my pajero dosent agree with 50ppm diesel, so I only use 500ppm with 1:200 ratio JASO FC 2SO added. Unfortunately it seems that only Shell Garages seem to stock it now.

Eish Conrad, that is bad news.

Don't read anything into the fact that I drive a V6..... I had 3 DiDs in a row and really trusted and respected that engine. 2SO and it still failed and yes.... again the no1 piston.

I really feel for you. Please keep us posted...

Herman, I bought the Paj with 80000km on the clock. The 90000km service was the last one done by the stealers. From there on I did the oil and filter services myself, as well as brakes. I used Delo 400 oil. Oil services were done at 7500km intervals until the car reached 150000km. From there on I started using 50PPM and increased the service interval to 10000km as 50PPM does not contaminate engine as quickly as 500PPM. The car is at 164000km now.
