Re: Clicking Noise From Rear
Any solutions to the problem?

I too have a clicking sound that sounds like it comes from the rear. It is worst when I reverse up the driveway where it gives a few clicks then stops and then when I pull off on the road it gives a few clicks again and then stops. First I thought maybe the CV's on the rear prop shaft might be dry or had bad grease in so I stripped and cleaned and packed new grease but no change...

The sound described by cobbers sounds to me like a backlash problem in the diff
Re: Clicking Noise From Rear
Hi SpikV,

This is exactly what I have, just as you've described it. Have you had a bash plate fitted at all? Mine seemed to get worse once I put the Lynx bash plate on, and even worse after I 'bashed' the plate on a concrete block...

Hi RedCat

No I don't even have the factory covers underneath. I highly doubt the bashplate will be the culprit.

Mine started with being stupid, I navigated an obstacle with difflock and made a sharp U turn right after. Ever since then it got progressively worse.

It seems as if this will require process of elimination but there isn't too many things it could be because I'm adamant its at the rear. Will see if I have time this weekend and pull a sideshaft or two...
Re: Clicking Noise From Rear
Hi Spikev,

I played around with my shifter yesterday while standing outside the car and have narrowed mine down to the read left wheel area. Not the bash plate (although the extra rigidy may affect the rest of the car somehow).

So, it might be that rust build up in the side-shaft where it enters the hub. I read about that somewhere in this forum. So hopefully yours is the same!

i'll have Mitspro pull mine and copper-slip the hell out of it and see if that helps?

Cheers,

Yeah... came across that thread now and seems like the answer... Big job on a shorty, lots of things on top of each other in the rear :? But with enough beer handy anything is a piece of cake

Re: Clicking Noise From Rear
Glad I found this thread.

I think there are two different problems being described here. I am experiencing a problem that is definitely not a clicking but more of a 'thud'

As described by someone here it sounds rear centre and also as one would imagine a backlash being taken up.
I can get mine to do it when I am stationary but run the shifter from drive to reverse. Also when driving, if I back off and then reapply power, the thud is there.
I took it to my local Mitsu Dealer and explained the story to the 'Adviser' Long story short, they replaced the 2 x bushes that mount the read diff, It made absolutely no difference.
I took it back a while later because it was due for its 150k km service and told them to keep looking.
They returned the vehicle saying that the prop needs to be replaced. interesting enough, the thud had gone. I can see that they have greased everywhere and tightened everything underneath. It took two weeks for them to get back to me with a price for a prop. R15k +Vat. I didn't tell them that the problem had gone away. Anyway, another two week later and I noticed that the noise is coming back so I recon they packed everything with grease and its held till now.
I don't understand what could have worn on a prop to cause backlash. I then spoke to someone yesterday that recons that some props have the splines set in then that connect to the UJ. These could be worn. He did say that any good prop workshop should be able to refurbish it at a fraction of the cost of a new prop. That will be my next step.

PS, earlier I had hired a torque wrench and 32mm socket and checked the tightness of the side shaft nuts but they were good and it made no difference.

My issue is exactly the same as Dirty Boy, I am still looking for a solution....

2006 GLS Auto with 150K km
It has full service history but I have only had it from 125k km. I need to check when it was supposed to be changed and then check the invoices.
Re: Clicking Noise From Rear
Hi Folks,

Apologies for not updating soon after my service at Mitspro. I spoke with Freek snr and he mentioned that they would tighten the CV nut (I think that's what he said). It is not a very simple task apparently, requiring them to remove the brakes etc to access the nut in / on the hub. Rear left btw.

Anyway, they did that and immediate improvement! The clicking went away instantly. But it didn't stay away. Slowly it is creeping back into my life! It's been about 2,000km since then. It's not as often as it was before they tightened the nut but it's back nonetheless.

So, i mentioned to Freek jnr about the 'fix' of stripping, copperslip on the splines, swapping the left shafts to the right etc. He basically indicated that would be a waste of time and I should rather then just take about R40,000 and give it to them so they can buy all new components from the hub to the diff on both sides and then I know its a fully new set-up. He effectively indicated that would be the only solution he would consider being involved in. If I'm honest, I felt a bit annoyed by that response but perhaps he's right.

I then pressed him to verbally indicate what he'd charge me if I really really really wanted to pay him to just try the solution of disassembling, cleaning, copper-slip, swapping over and putting back together. He said it would be about a full day at least, and he'd zap me R10k labour.

So, I've spoken to the guys at Imperial, and they suggest I just find a nearly new written off one with front end damage, buy the rear components off that and they'll do the labour. Still no idea of prices but if anyone knows of a recently written off BK LWB, i'm in the market for some donor organs!
