Control arm bushes
Gents,
Going over some speed bumps this morning (I encounter them every day) there was a distinct knock from the front left. I could even feel it. Because I had new tyres fitted on Monday I immediately checked the wheel nuts, but they were fine. On the return trip to my office I couldn't replicate the knock over same bumps (but downhill this time).

How best to assess and address this issue - keeping in mind I live in Barberton.

I would first start by maybe checking the shock absorbers for health, especially their bushes at the bottom where the eye and bolt sit. My experience is that they can make horrible noises when they start to go south and at your mileage they might rather be the culprits in stead of the control arm bushes. Any proper tyre shop might be able to assist with this.

Re: Control arm bushes
Yo Cats. Thanks for response.
Unfortunately I sensed a more "solid" knock than just a simple little shock bush.

I actually inspected the shocks for oil leaks as well as their mounting points when the car was suspended on Monday. I also inspected the complete undercarrage after the techy had set the allignment.

It is due for 135k service as soon as I get an opportunity, maybe my indi will be able to find the culprit.

I'll keep you guys posted.
I have never kept a car this long before and I'm not sure that I'll enjoy the ride.

Time will tell.

Re: Control arm bushes
I have tried in vain to replicate the symptom as per my OP. All seems to be well.
All visual inspections as well as pulling, pushing, kicking and slapping of the wheel failed to show any problem.

I'll keep a weather eye on it and keep you gents updated.

Re: Control arm bushes
Nope... it is still there. Definitely only on the uphill run and only on those particular speed bumps. I'll keep "analysing" and hopefully have some informed optiones to discuss with my indi at service time.

Re: Control arm bushes
Roelf,

Confirm or eliminate firstly the anti-sway bars, by disconnecting them (easy to do).
Next would be to remove the shocks.

If the noise is then still there, you are in for control arms.

Re: Control arm bushes
I agree with the swaybars.

I had a knock on my gen3 (almost identical setup to gen4) that took me forever to find and eventually tracked it to the swaybar end links (stabilizer links)

Looks like this

Re: Control arm bushes
I'll do my best to ellaborate on the symptom.
1) Suspension is quiet and perfect over uneven surfaces - where I would normally expect the anti-sway bar bushes to complain.
2) The noise is "solid" and can be felt under my feet.
3) It seems to only come out on big extention of the spring/shock. That is why (I think) it only manifests itself on uphill and not down hill.
