1) Suspension is quiet and perfect over uneven surfaces - where I would normally expect the anti-sway bar bushes to complain.
2) The noise is "solid" and can be felt under my feet.
3) It seems to only come out on big extention of the spring/shock. That is why (I think) it only manifests itself on uphill and not down hill.

HI Roelf - Silly question....
Have you checked if your battery is fastened down 100%? it is situated above the left wheel and could cause the clunk when you drive over the speed bump at speed?

I know mine is loose, the appie who fastened it (at the diesel mechanic workshop) over tightened the top strap nuts and tore the steel eye mounts out from the plastic fibre battery tray.... :x :x

Need to see if i can find a secondhand one or mod the tray to be more sturdy.

Ok, the Pajero is back from the service. The mechanic found nothing wrong, but this morning the right front has now joined the frig'n choir. I have an appointment at a suspension specialist this afternoon. This has to be sorted ASAP.

Did they check the anti sway bar connectors?

Re: Control arm bushes
Everything checked out fine during service, but I'll give the specialists a try and see where we stand.
All bushing and rubbers really look brand new.
The clunk is only there when the front wheels drop down far and fast.

I cannot stop thinking that maybe something went wrong when my car was jacked up for new tyres. It wasn't possible for me to personally join my mechy at the service inspection, but I'll have my nose in there this afternoon.

Driving over uneven surfaces is perfectly fine, and surely any warn rubbers or bushes will complain like mad under those conditions. The shock are not leaking oil, but maybe they be gas. If no damage to suspension, then a shock change could be considered. I have no objection (in principle) to replace shocks after seven years.

Re: Control arm bushes
We couldn't replicate the knock at the suspension boys. Testing the bushes showed the following:
Lower control arms - perfect
Upper control arms - 50% and will replace.
Swaybar bushes fine
Rear trailing arms - both sides, both ends out of shape and movement and will replace.
Their shock tester is not working due to failing of 3-phase power supply. As the shocks are original, we decided to replace all four.

Quote is R10,800 all in. I left the old money guzzler there and have been promised to have it ready for collection tomorrow afternoon.

Expensive day for you Roelf. I would gladly swop a R10800 bill for the way I feel today. Absolutely the worst I've felt in a long time :(.

What shocks did you go for? The KYB?
