I have a rather high mileage Gen 3 (2000 model, 380k) DiD SWB Manual that has a very annoying clonk coming from the rear. The noise is most noticeable when changing from first to second, and then again from second to third. You can actually feel the clonk. I have slowly being fixing other things on the car hoping one would remove this noise, so all rear suspension bushes and diff carrier bushes have been replace, but alas the noise is still there.
I have been told that this is play in the diff and that I need to replace it. If I grab the drive shaft and give it a twist, it does have quite a bit of movement so "they" could be right.
So, does anyone know if this is the diff and does it really require the diff to be replaced or can it be "fixed".
If it does need to be replaced, anyone have a old model rear diff lying about
