actuator
Hi,Need some help to ID this problem. I have a 2001 3.2 manual SWB Pajero. I was driving in H4 and when returned to 2H started hearing a noise that sounded like a actuator trying to open or close from under the dash or floor (not sure exactly  ), this I only hear whilst driving in 2H, while stationary no noise.
Hope can assist me!
Regards
Derek

Sounds like the same problem I had with my 2003 SWB 3.2 Manual.

The following happened when I tried to shift back from 4H to 2H. The four green 4x4 indicator lights would flash as if it's trying to get back into 2H mode but all of a sudden the centre orange light (centre diff lock) would come on and this was then followed by a grinding noise as if the gears were not properly engaged. This happened while on a roadtrip ±700km from home. The only way I could drive the car was to shift into 4H and leave it there until I could get it to the guys at CNET.

Had it checked out and after cleaning the shifter and checking the sensors and vacuum hose connections it turned out to be the actuator that needed replacement. While this was quite a pricey item to replace it could have been something as simple as a vacuum hose that came of.

If you're in Johannesburg speak to Louis at CNET (Bramfisher Drive Randburg, Tel zero 11 787 771 seven).
I had very good service from them.

Re: actuator
check that the actuator moves as follows

If not check for broken vacuum pipes. You may need to replace both vacuum solenoids. They have a limited lifespan.
