Hi all. I own a 1997 pajero 3.5L.
Recently my pajero started a humming/almost grinding sound.
Initially, it appeared at 80kmh and abated at 84kmH. However, it has progressed to where the onset is at 60kmh and abates around 100kmh.
It does not change with revs but rather with speed and sounds like it is coming from the front.
Any ideas?

I'm sure it can be any number of things. I had a similar issue on my 2006 lwb (more or less same speed you describe). In my case I was lucky what it was the rear tyres (old Wrangler ATR if I recall correctly). After some new tyres on the rear, the humming noise was gone. Was quite surprised (but very relieved
) that tyres could made so much noise!

Check those, they start to growl when on their way out. Jack each wheel up and spin them by hand, you can actually hear and feel the bearing making the noise.

Tyres or wheel bearings. Swap the tyres around front to back and see if it changes. The tyres seem to hum if flat spotted (probably caused by a dying shock absorber
). When jacking up the wheels first spin them a couple of times and listen for the grinding. If it makes a grinding noise while in the air it might be the bearings or best of all, the brake pads. Stuck calliper?

HI Everyone,
Thanks a lot for answering!
To date: I have changed the front bearings and I have had all 4 CV boots replaced. They have also checked the CV joints during the process.
Sadly, the noise is still there. But I am going to rotate the tyres to see if it may be the cause.
Many thanks again
Paul

HI All,
I am just checking in to let you know that the grinding humming sound has mysteriously disappeared.
I did rotate the tyres and the sound remained for approx 100km's and then just stopped!
So I am hoping it was the tyres! Thanks again all!!
