Like Joint play sound when pressing accelerator
My 2008 gen 4 3.2 did has this sound every time when we press the throttle it's like a play in something. Mitsu said it could be because of the wheel hub play so got it replaced both rear wheel hub assembly but the sound is still there.

What could be the issue?

Thanks
Joseph
Re: Like Joint play sound when pressing accelerator
Hi Joseph,

a few questions:
1) How long have you had it? since new, or a recent purchase?
2) Does it happen every time you press the accelerator?
3) Does it also happen if you take your foot of the peddle while you were accelerating.

I ask these because I thought I had the same issue when I first purchased my Gen4. But it would appear for a day or two then disappear for a few days. I called it the monday blues for about a month and then i realised I was filling up on Sunday before work, and it would knock on Monday and tuesday morning. As soon as my tank dropped by 20% it would disappear. It was the fuel tank - not loose, just had a few mm movement when full.

Its still doing it 170,000km later! And it's common!
Re: Like Joint play sound when pressing accelerator
I also have rather annoying fuel tank noises as described - never had them on my Gen 3

Also noticed this much more on my gen4 in relation to the gen3. When about 80% full it is at its worst and then simply dissapear.

Re: Like Joint play sound when pressing accelerator
Hi redcat mine is automatic pj ns model

1.i bought it second hand when it had done 80k kms and since then this sound is there.
2. Yes
3.yes but when I changed both rear hub assembly that sound is gone when we take the foot off throttel ... When driving If I press the throttel quickly the knocking sound is more audible and if I press very gently u won't hear it ...

I asked the same question in the pajclub au forum and there someone said it could be rear axle total backlash not in spec which is 5mm. Will check and let u all know that.
Don't think it's a fuel tank noise
Re: Like Joint play sound when pressing accelerator
Hi Jo,

That is unusual if it is the rear axel. Considering such low mileage. Do keep us posted!

As a final thought, have you checked the recess where the rear seats fold or tools are located? maybe somethings 'rolling' around there.

Good luck!

Subscribed to this thread.

I also have a propshaft / driveshaft noise when I accelerate / decelerate at low speed most audible (traffic) on my gen 3 SWB. To me it sounds as if its coming from the front shaft / suspension. Which makes no sense to me as it is in RWD most of the time.

If I was still driving my discovery I would say it was definitely the front shaft.

I will check the tank level versus noise during the course of next week and report back. Hopefully its something as small as that.

Today checked the axle backlash at mitsu
Rear axle total backlash is 6mm which is above the limit. Now my question is how to make it back in spec?

The service manual says to Remove differential carrier and check
1.final drive gear backlash
2.differential gear backlash

If these are not in spec and there is excessive play do we have replace these gears or can it be adjusted/corrected to spec?

Re: Like Joint play sound when pressing accelerator
Hi

I have the same sound on my Gen 4 2010 130000km

I hear the "thud" sound when I come off the throttle and apply throttle too (not all the time though) and then when I come off throttle and the car shifts up a gear its loudest.

I have also been thinking that its bushes on the rear diff but the above test for play will be my next test as it seems easiest to do.
