Hi,
I'm looking at buying a swb 3.2 did in Johanessburg (I'm in Cape Town) and want to have some tests done before I purchase it.
I've asked for an AA test and a compression test to be completed. Is there anything else I should consider?
What about the injectors, diesel pump etc?
I realise I'm taking a risk buying a car without driving it, but the dealer is reputable (as far as I know) and I'm hoping the tests will weed out any glitches.
Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks!
Mileage?
Full Service History?
These engines have built up a reputation for reliability, so the risk is not all that great.
There are never any gaurantees, but at least you are looking at one of the better Tds around.

Its got about 165, 000 km on the clock and has a FSH.
Would you recommend any test other than AA and compression?

AA tests usually don't show engine niggles, but will identify major crimes.dwinter wrote:Its got about 165, 000 km on the clock and has a FSH.

Compression tests will show the condition of the rings, valves and bores. None of these are known 4m41 problems.
My very simple phylosophy is as follows: Look at the rest of the car (interior, chassis, tyres, cleanliness, scratches etc), and you will get an idea of the previous owner's attitude towards his vehicles.
I believe that if somebody looked after the rest of the car, he would have looked after the engine as well.
DWinter - if you share the dealers details, maybe someone from the JHB area can have a look on the appearance...I'm around the town this upcoming weekend. If the dealer is somewhere close, I can have a quick look and share some fotos with you via email...
4eP - agree, typically the shape of the interior allows a 50/50 judgment. But I have read, the car is at a dealer for sale - many of them "brush up" their cars for sale - that can be misleading.

This is sound philosophy but you can miss out on some bargains this way. Mine had very obviosuly seen a lot of overlanding and probably quite a few trails when I bought it. It was obvious from what the underneath looked like, and the fittings, but the engine was immaculate (only needed a new water pump and now an idle control valve, neither components really being able to be linked to abuse.4ePajero wrote: My very simple phylosophy is as follows: Look at the rest of the car (interior, chassis, tyres, cleanliness, scratches etc), and you will get an idea of the previous owner's attitude towards his vehicles.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
I asked the dealer to send me some photos, which I've attached - it looks very nice to me, but who knows? I've also spoken to the previous owner who said he looked after it, but I guess everything is relative. He might be a lead-foot
I get the AA and compression tests back at the end of the week.
Mr 2-blue - thanks for the good suggestion!

Tomorrow, I'm in our GO in Rivonia, I'll have a look afterwards ...including fotos

From the photos above, is it possible to tell whether this vehicle has rear diff lock or traction control?
It's a 2003 model.
