How long does OEM shock absorbers last?
Hi Guys

Yes, I know. How long is a piece of string, right? My Gen4 now has just over 100,000 km on the clock (a 2010 model). I have not done a lot of serious hard stuff. Most of the km's done have been on tar and gravel.

Last year I fitted a set of powerbrakes and a new set of Cooper AT3 tyres.

When should I start worrying? How many km's does a the OEM shocks do on regular driving before needing replacement? Not wanting to change anything, just already thinking of any possible "unforseen" expenses the new year may bring.

Regards

Kieviet

Hi Kieviet,
I replaced mine at about 130k. The front ones started knocking. I replaced all four then.

Hi Roelf

Can you recall the cost?
Re: How long does OEM shock absorbers last?
R4k approx - fitted. I had Monroe shocks fitted, but also had a few bushes replaced. Total was about R11k. Invoice should be at home, waiting for the next e-filing.

Thanks Roelf, the estimate is sufficient.

Roelf, I have a 2006 Gen 3 with 165k km. I think it still has the original shocks and was thinking that they probably will need changing soon.
A few weeks back it suddenly developed a "clunk". Its coming from the front and happens at times on accelleration, braking or going over a speed bump or dip. Would this describe the same knock that you had ?

I want to replace with original make . Did you source from the dealers or a normal shock replacement shop ?

Many thanks.

Check your anti sway bar links and rubbers before changing your shocks. They normally give similar symptoms of knocking over bumps.

Hi Dirty Boy,
I'd say your symptoms do correlate with mine. Mine only knocked on big movement. It wasn't a "rattle" on every little bump, it required quite a big movement.

I replaced with "normal" Monroe shocks at a suspension shop.

Thanks Nick and Roelf.
I will check the anti sway bar rubbers.

Mine also isnt a rattle and doesnt do it on every bump, so yes, sounds like shocks.
