Pajero Sport
What are the thoughts on the Pajero Sport, will it handle the rough stuff. I have read quite a lot of reviews about it laclustre engine performance but would appreciaet some advice on its offroad capability and general reliability!
Re: Pajero Sport
The Sport is based on the Triton bakkie, which has built up a reputation of being more than capable off road.
I saw a Sport at the Kraal outside East London, and it went places more difficult than what I would ever attempt or require. It went through a rocky river crossing which I would be reluctant to attempt with my Gen1.

I own a Pajero with a similar 3,2 Di-D engine. Anyone requiring more power than what the Di-D delivers, is looking at the wrong type of vehicle.
The top speed is not top of the class either, but again, if that is the measure, the Sport is not the right vehicle.
Although the output (on paper) is not class-leading any more, the tractability is still in the top echelon.
The variable vane turbo and large capacity engine ensures power from idle onwards.
The reliability of the Di-D engine is becoming legendary.

Road holding is most probably top of the class and certainly way better than its closest rival.

Finish and build quality is ..... Mitsubishi.

Re: Pajero Sport
At the Joburg launch Jannie Rykhaart had one that he does all his training in and he was very happy with it. I cornered him one side from the mitsu reps and in his words it was a winner, he was not scared to put it against any of its competitors and come up tops and as a bonus it does not fall over by itself

I cornered some of the mitsu sales folk and a TANNIE put me in my place :o The undercarridge of the triton was used up to a point and that was where it stopped, it has a zo of its own features and is by no means a triton with a bit of bodywork done to it. I tried to water down her enthusiasm for the vehicle but she had the right answers for every question that I threw at her to the extent that I have made up my mind to replace Kasper with a sport ....if and when the time comes. To be honest with you this TANNIE knew her onions not only as far as mitsu products go but the general 4x4 scene.

Re: Pajero Sport
I caught a lift in a Sport with a Mitsu company car a few months ago and it seemed ok - however the driver did complain about the lack of grunt/power when overtaking on the highway.

Also the headspace for the middle row seats were not enough in my case - at 1.93m height, I had to sit with a slightly bent neck alongside two other persons.

Re: Pajero Sport
I've recently replaced my trusty fully equipped Hilux with a Sport. We took it into Botswana last weekend and I was very pleasantly surprised.

With the 3rd row eats folded, it takes almost as much stuff as the Hilux used to. Fully loaded it cruises at very illegal speeds without feeling uphills, still returning 9,3l/100km.

Off road in the sandy and wet river bed it was more capable than the driver, often pulling us through thick sand and water with brute force.

Complaints? Just one - the jack is useless. Ever tried digging a hole under a flat wheel, in a tarred road, with a camping shovel?

Old caravanner's trick:
Place the spare wheel on it's side, directly in front of the flat wheel.
Drive carefully (in 4WD) on to the spare (a floor mat can be used to protect the spare's rim).
Jack will now fit! :D

(if available, you can use a brick, rock, log etc as well)

Re: Pajero Sport
Problem was that the jack is way to small and only has a few cm's of lift. A rock under the jack eventually helped together with brute muscle power for those last few cm's.
