Morning,
I'm looking at another swb and have a question about servicing.
The car has a FSH with mitsubishi until 97500. The car missed it's 105k (major) service, but the owner did a lube service at 110k. The car is now on 117k. If I buy the car I'll do a major service immediately - won't wait until 120k.
How critical do you think this missed service is? The vehicle has mainly been used for town driving and some light 4x4ing.
Am I crazy to even consider buying this vehicle?
as long as oil and filters were changed regularly you shouldn't have to worry too much.
The only item that MIGHT fail at that stage is the cam chain tensioner.

This is a difficult one to call. It could be that this is irrelevant, if the vehicle really had an easy life and was always fed good, clean, low sulphur diesel. It would have been nice if you knew it had only done long distance travelling.
Anyway, here are the facts about how the missed services impact the vehicle in my opinion:
Effectively the one oil change interval has been stretched from 7500 km to 12500 km (the one that should have between 97500 km and 105000 km, but which only happened at 110000 km). The 105000 km service is not a service where anything other than the engine oil and filter is scheduled to be replaced (and the air cleaner, if needed), although several checks are supposed to be performed.
Also note the following:
* The fuel filter was supposed to have been replaced at 112500 km. In other words, the fuel filter change interval has been stretched from 22500 km to 27500 km.
* The air cleaner element is supposed to be checked at each service and only replaced if needed, but is likely to be in need of replacement now after having been in there for at least 19500 km.
The 120000 km service requires the following to be replaced:
Engine Oil and Filter
Automatic transmission fluid (Important: use Mitsubishi Dia Queen ATF SPIII transmission fluid)
Air purifier element (cabin air filter). This is an expensive little filter!
Brake fluid (system to be flushed)
Engine coolant (system to be flushed, use genuine Mitsubishi pre-mixed coolant )
If you decide to take this vehicle, get the dealer to have the 120000 km service done at Mitsubishi and make sure the above is actually done. Also get them to change the fuel filter that is long overdue at the same time and insist on a new air cleaner element.
If you take this one, you could do the 120000 km service 3000km early (at 117000 km) and then slowly bring the vehicle back to the correct interval by servicing it again at:
125000 km (the 127500 km service)
133000 km (the 135000 km service)
141000 km (the 142500 km service)
149000 km (the 150000 km service)
157000 km (the 157500 km service)
165000 km (the 165000 km service)
This stretches each oil change interval from 7500 km to 8000 km until all is aligned with the original plan at 165000 km. Alternatively, you can keep going at 7500 km intervals and simply keep doing each service 3000 km "early" compared to the Mitsubishi schedule. Use only top quality engine oil regardless of which option is selected.

Many thanks 4e and Gerrit,
If I do go for it I'll stagger the services like you suggested.
The owner had the car dyno'd today so I'll post those results fyi as well - will be interesting to see how they compare to the first car.
