Suspension Options for Gen4 LWB
Hi,

I am preparing our Gen4 LWB for its first trip into Namibia and I want to get the right suspension setup.
The vehicle is a 2010 model that has now done about 135000 kms on the OE suspension, and whilst everything looks OK I get the feeling that its not quite as high as it was originally.
The front has been weighed down with a Front Runner bashplate, winch & dual battery setup.

I have 4 options and would really appreciate any advice on which suspension setup to choose.
1. A complete Pedders kit ( 4 new shocks and new front springs)
2. A complete OME kit ( 4 new shocks and 4 new springs)
3. Air spring helpers in the original rear springs and lift blocks in the front.
4. Stay with the original Mitsu setup.

I have no experience of Pedders suspension and so it could be an expensive experiment. Old Man Emu would give me about 40mm lift with all of the advantages & disadvantages that are written about, air spring helpers can be 'tuned' on the day to fit requirements and lift blocks are easy to fit and remove, which makes option 3 quite attractive.

I would like your suggestions and comments on this project, even the negative ones .

Thanks in advance.

Dave
Re: Suspension Options for Gen4 LWB
Hi Dave.

You have clearly done your research and have a pretty good idea of what you want.

OME are proven and will work, no question. So it’s prize number 1 but pricey.

The airbags work very well and the front spacers are also good but because you have some weight on the front, heavier coils are better.

If I had to make the Decision and cost wasn’t a question, I would go full OME or Tough Dog.

If cost is a consideration, heavy coils upfront and airbags in the back

Hi Guys

Sorry to butt in to this conversation, I am considering upgrading my rear suspension by installing rear coil spring airbags.
You mention these but could you give me a bit more detail on exactly what they are called, where to get them, cost etc?

Many thanks

Try the Air Spring Supply Company or google Firestone Air Helpers

Re: Suspension Options for Gen4 LWB
Hi,
I was quoted for "Air Spring Supply Company Air Cushions" @ just under R6k, and then 4 hours labour for fitting them.

I don't like anyone that I don't know working on my vehicle and 4 hours looks excessive.

Re: Suspension Options for Gen4 LWB
To remove and replace the rear coils is no more than 30min per side.

Jack up the car
Remove the wheel
Slide wheel under the axle for safety
Undo the top nut on the shock, and maybe the bottom bolt and nut
Pull out the coil and shock
Slide in the airbag (I assume, never done it before)
Refit everything.

And if you have a workshop with a lift, then even faster I presume.

Re: Suspension Options for Gen4 LWB
Hi Dave,
I have Tough Dog Foam Cell shocks and springs on both my SWB and LWB.
The ride quality, on and offroad is great.
The supplier is Opposite Lock in JHB. They supplied assembled front units for easy installation.
On the LWB I had 50mm front and 30 mm rear lift.
Re: Suspension Options for Gen4 LWB
Hi,
Bit late reading this - here's my 2 cents worth....
On my 2008 SWB I fitted Bilstein shocks all around,
On the front: Where the spring seat is, it was machined further up - giving some lift.
On the rear: New progressive coils - longer than standard to match the front lift.
This gives somewhere in the region of 25-30mm of body lift. So far nearly 80.000 kms with this set up and no problems. Bilsteins can be serviced, so in theory I do not need to buy any more shocks!
Had OME kit on Landcruiser s/w and on Disco 1. A bit expensive nowadays and bit harsher ride - but no problems.
Had Air Lift bags on a Disco 2 and worked well - just pump it up to get your vehicle / trailer caravan level.
Currently tow Echo Namib for the last 7 years - Moz, Zim and Botswana without any problems and a bit of juggling withe tow ball height and it rides perfectly level with the SWB loaded as well.
Hope this helps,
Re: Suspension Options for Gen4 LWB
Air helpers - to fit or not to fit ? It seems quite a controversial topic.
Three guys on YouTube (Andrew St Pierre White was one of them) say don't do it as air bags can damage your chassis and negate your shocks. Any thoughts on this ?
