Seems like I have to have my intake manifold carbon cleaned, possibly an EGR blank done after that. Rough idling and excess smoke when engine warms up. Strange though, it doesn't happen with every drive.
Can anyone recommend a mechanic or somewhere where I can attend to this in Cape Town? I've seen some guys offering a "non-invasive" clean, but I'm sceptical. Does anyone have experience wth this? Also seems like it would be a massive job to remove the manifold and get it cleaned...?
Any advice appreciated.

It is not too difficult to do this job. Just takes time.
I did mine a few months ago. used pressure washer and oven cleaner.
Looks like new now.
For EGR blank use a piece of stainless steel plate and put it on inlet manifold side.
5 min job for fitting.

I am planning to do my Gen 4 soon as well. I service my car with Jacques Norval and when I was there a few weeks back he had just completed an intake manifold and intercooler clean on a clients 2.5 triton. Give him a shout.

Interesting subject ---the carbon cleaning of the inlet manifold.
Where are the carbon deposits originating ? Diesel 500 ppm , 50 ppm or even 10 ppm ?
Why does the turbo not suffer the same carbon problem on both ends (exhaust side and boost side) ???
