I am experiencing a strange problem - my car's engine will either just cuts out as if you switched the ignition off whilst driving, or it will loose power whilst the engine starts knocking like a tractor engine. At the same time I am loosing at least 50% power and sometimes associated with excessive white smoke.
If I try to start the motor without turning the key to totally off again, it does not start. As soon as I turn the ignition completely off, the car starts normal as if nothing was wrong.
This problem happens intermittently. I have experienced this in Feb this year and now all of a sudden again.
What I have noticed is that as soon as this happens, the A/T Temp light comes on at the same time.
I have replaced the suction control valve in Feb 2019.
Sounds like it could be "self protecting" by going into limp mode on a transmission oil overheat signal.
If it was me I'd check the transmission oil level and condition before attempting any other diagnosis.
Do you tow heavy loads much?

Roelf,
Not towing any loads at all. Transmission oil level is 100%. This also happens when the engine/gearbox is cold and/or hot. I have been driving now for two days and no problem......

I cant recall if the 3.2 Pajero Sport was already common rail injection or not. If it still has the diesel pump like on the first 3.2 Pajero gen 3, then I would look at diesel pump timing.
Does it throw any codes that you can trace.

Cats,
The Sport is Commonrail.
The problem is electronic if turning off the ignition can cure the issue.
I'm pretty convinced this car needs a diagnostic check and I suspect the gearbox temp sensor could be dodgy.

Pajero 3.2 DiD; 2000 : I had an intermittent hesitation; loss of power followed by a jerk, a puff of white smoke and then back to normal
Not the same problem but very similar issue?
Took his advice and had Mickey from ProEngineering in Paarden Eiland, CT. do the following:
He blanked off the Exhaust Reticulation/ Re circulation so that it does not feed back into the manifold.
Problems sorted: no loss of power or increased consumption.

I can agree to that one as it works every time i switch off the ignition. I have done a diagnostic test at Mitsu but they could find anything wrong.Roelf_le_Roux wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2019 5:49 pm Cats,

I am going to replace the A/T sensor and take it from there.
For the past 2 weeks the PS drives smoothly without any loss of power......frustrating as you never know when it is going to drop you....
