Re: whistling sound after I used the brakes?
4E,
Yip, but the Gen3 doesn't have the classic vacuum booster that runs off the inlet manifold. There is an electric motor that drives a pump. I have no idea if this pump is supposed to blow or suck

When you turn the ignition on, you can hear it running, almost like the fuel pump I fitted on my Austin 1100 a lifetime ago. On my current Pajero I can feel it on the brake pedal when in standing traffic. It seems to start up and then switch off again - I assume as required. This is something I never noticed on my DiDs. Either this car has a "rough" unit or maybe the rough idling of the previous diesels (compared to the silky smooth V6) hid the unit from being noticed.

Either way, if the Toyota club abducted me and insisted that I complain about something on the Gen3 Pajero, I think this brake system will be the only thing.

Re: whistling sound after I used the brakes?
HI All

The brakes from the gen 3 are vacuum assisted as per normal brakes without ABS. The electric pump and accuator are part of the ABS setup. The whishling noise is generated from a valve inside the accuator. This unit is a sealed factory unit. If at the outmost that anything does go wrong, this unit will aonly affect the ABS workability on the brakes and will not cause brake failure as you will still have the use of the vehicle with normal brake funcionality.

According to the bulletin that was released from MM 9 years ago, this noise is as a result of pressure release from the valve inside the unit.

Hope this helps

Ok - Report back time

Firstly, before taking the vehicle in I tried Roelf's advice of STOMPING on the brake pedal HARD for a few times. This definately seem to do something as the whistling noise was now becoming a little more inconsistent where before it was like clockwork everytime I used the brakes. I did however notice that if you push it hard and keep pushing that the pedal actualy slowly goes down almost all the way to the floor :o . After doing this a few times consistently an alarm would sound inside the cabin and the ABS and brake warning lamp would iluminate. If you switch off and back on again all is back to normal. The whistling did not disapear completely however.

I looked at the accumulator unit and it looked pretty much sealed to me with no option to fix, so I did not take it with me when I picked up my vehicle. It apparantly work on suction as per the service guy.

The whistling has now left my vehicle and entered Mitsu service center who is whistling all the way to the bank with my money :? At least they could identify and fix the unit properly so I am happy, although decidedly poorer by about R2500, including labour. I did however decline the milion rands charged for alleged wiper blades that needed replacement on my vehicle.

Thanks guys, things are slowly making sense.

Cats,
Surely you are exagerating, a million rand for two wipers sounds a bit much. My Mits dealer only charged R800 for my wipers. Sjoe, now I'm glad I wasn't charged a million bucks.
