A few questions from a new 3.2 did owner
Hi,

I've had my 2004 3.2did for about a month now and have a few questions:

1 - The oil level light comes on when the engine is cold and I'm heading up a hill - it goes off when the road flattens out and doesn't reappear after that.

I've read about this issue before and assume it's not critical - should I just throw some more oil in (500ml?) to prevent this or just ignore it?

2 - On a few occasions with a cold start and then acceleration there's a loud squeal from the engine - I assume this is a belt of sorts that needs tightening or replacing? The noise is linked to acceleration and only happens straight after start-up and when pulling away.

Fan belt perhaps? Is there anything more sinister this could be?

3 - When pulling away from a cold start and driving slowly (about 10 - 20km/h) I find it sometimes struggles to get out of first gear (auto box). Even when I knock it over into tiptronic it won't go into 2nd gear. When I speed up it changes normally.

Is this a safety feature with the auto boxes or could there be something wrong?

Apart from these issues I'm absolutely loving the vehicle!!

Thanks.

Re: A few questions from a new 3.2 did owner
1. Seems like a sensor thing. if it does not happen when the engine is hot, I would not be to concerned. "Over-filling" with 500ml should be OK.

2. Alternator V-belt.

3. Cold transmissions sometimes shift badly. Make sure ATF level is OK.

dwinter,

The oil level light is not uncommon on the DiD. Yes, give it some extra oil.

I'm pretty sure it's a v-belt you hear. I suggest you check the general condition of the belts and their tension.

The 1st gear autobox thing is standard, it is the way it is programmed. "We" are conditioned to just move our cars in 1st and then take 2nd. Sometimes we even like to take off in 2nd. The auto box will have non of that. The computer will not be over ridden by the tiptronic either. I know, it feels and sounds very wrong, but deep down we have to accept it is the best for the motor to not "labour" at low speed in 2nd. I never fully got used to it with my DiD's, but the V6 is more quiet and smooth and is thus less noticable when it does the 1st gear thing.
