Hi ,
please can you advise me :
I bought my 1997 pajero 3.5 v6 DOHC and owner said I must only use LRP but the mechanic says I can use unleaded (just run tank to almost empty then fill her up with unleaded). In the service Data it says I can use leaded 97- unleaded 95.
yet another gentleman says that if she has been using LRP all this time one should keep it .

soo now confused and want to do the right thing.

Looks like you should unleaded. Leaded kills the catalytic converter! - I think

I don't think the SA spec Gen 2s had catalytic converters, but they are supposed to use platinum tipped spark plugs (due to the fact that it is a bit of a mission to change plugs on them) and those work best with fuels that do not create deposits, i.e. unleaded fuels.

The NAAMSA website is full of errors, though. I see they reckon the 3.5 motor is the 6G72...

Not too sure if it is appliable to the 6G72 engine, but unless an engine was specifically designed to be used with unleaded fuel a phenomenon called "valve seat recession" may stuff up the head. For affceted engines an AVSR (anti valve seat recession) additive is required when lead replacement is no longer available. But as pic in 4ePik's post shows the engine is unleaded compatible this should not ne the case ....

I'm a bit of a traditionalist an will stick to lead replacement fuel on any non-cat car untill the last drop tuns out ...

I wrote to DCSA when I got the Pajero. Their response to me was all SA spec 6G72 and 6G74 vehicles are to use unleaded.

Besides which LRP is almost as environmentally unfriendly as leaded.

Im a bit confused now.

I drive a 1996 3500 V6 GLS 5 door Pajero (6G74 enjin). The original owners handbook (printed May 1995) point out on p 5-4:
FUEL USAGE
Petrol:
Recommended leaded fuel octane ratying - Highest octane available.

(In Afrikaans: Aanbevole LOODHOUDENDE brandstofoktaangetal - Hoogste oktaan bekikbaar)

Nowhere any mention of UNLEADED fuel.

On the backcover of the owners handbook it is indicated as follow:
COAST 3000 + 3500 Pajero: Leaded 97 - Unleaded 95
REEF: 3000 + 3500 Pajero: Leaded 93 - Unleaded 91

According to my knowledge the LRP fuel is the replacement for LEADED 93 fuel (as recommended on the back cover and for highest LEADED fuel as recommended on p5-4 in the handbook.) As the 6G74 has no catalytic converters I think the highest octane "leaded" fuel, which is LRP, is the recommended fuel to us.e

This is however not consistence with SimonB and DCSA's advice. Did anything changed between 1996 and 1997 on the 6G74 enjins e.g. catalytic converters?

Unleaded is a superior fuel as it has the most "development" pushed into it.

I think unleaded is good enough for cars that needed leaded in the old days.

I ran lrp in my old carbed jetta and it was fine.
I ran lrp and later unleaded in my 3000 V6 and it was fine as well. If anything I saved a bit on fuel with the unleaded.
