What Pajero should i get??
Hi everyone! I am new to the forum!!

I have joined to get some info on Pajeros as i am looking at buying one in the near future! I would really appreciate some feedback from you guys!

I am looking at buying second hand, with a price range of up to around R80 000. I will be buying to use as a second vehicle/ toy as well as using it to tow my ski boat (under 1 Ton)

I have been scanning the ads on Gumtree and some other places online and it seems like there are quite a few for sale in my price range, but most of them have high milage (over 200 000km) I have spoken to some of my mates that know a bit about cars and they say that i should avoid a diesel engine with that sort of milage, so i am thinking along the lines of a 3.0L V6 or the 3.5 V6

So, what are the advantages of SWB vs LWB, the most obvious is the size, what about fuel consumption, handling etc etc, anyone care to comment?

For that sort of money you'll get a very nice blisterfender LWB Gen 2.5 (1998-2000) or early Gen 3 SWB (2000-2001). In the Gen 2.5 the 3.5 V6 is probably the preferred engine, but in the Gen 3 the 3.2 DiD is hard to beat (even if I drive a V6 myself - still a very nice engine).

SWB should be a little lighter on fuel and a lot nippier around town. And they have better breakover angles. But they can also fall over when tackling axle twisters with too much enthusiasm. Obviously the LWB has more space and is therefore much more versatile (like lugging around all the kit you need for a day out with the boat). I prefer heavier vehicles for towing, especially if its going to be a hefty load, so if it was me I'd be shopping for a 98-00 3.5V6 LWB handrat (apparantly the box is from a 3T Canter truck - so it is STRONG).

Happy hunting!

I'll be surpised if too many people here were to argue with Scubadude's summary. I think he has it spot on.

I suggets you make a short-list of Gen 2 Blisterfender 3.5V6 and any Gen 3 (diesel or petrol) in your price range and start looking at them. Try to spend some time with a SWB to make sure you understand the limitations associated with the size and the 2 doors. If you seriously consider a SWB, then you are welcome to PM me (or in the open on this forum) for my opinion on the difference between long and short.

Happy hunting

Thanks for your input guys, i have found a 99 model Lwb 3.5 with 150 000km for around 80k that i will be looking at this afternoon, my on ly concern is the fuel economy, what sort of milage do you get on the 3.5, obviously the heavier your foot the heavier it will be, but what would you get on average?

Not so bad as you might expect ... and you get used to it very quickly. Like the pain you felt the first month or two after getting DSTV. It soon fades away and you make the neccesary adjustments. By the way, I have found a dead certain way to cut my fuel bill by 10%! No, seriously, a full 10% - thats almost the equivalent of one extra km/l! And it's easy to do as well ... I just drive 10% less :)

You can expect anything between 8.5 (careful mixed cycle and moderate speed highway cruising) to 3 (heavy sand) km/l. Average should be 7 - 7.5. But as you said the size of the tank is inversely proportional to weight of the right foot.

Let us know how it goes :)

You might find that the pajero is one of the lighter ones as far as consumption is concerned in this class. A friend of mine has a cruiser and he does back flips if he gets 4 km/l. With 150k on the clock this baby is barely run in and should give you another 150k without any drama at all.

Best of luck

I've actually managed to get mine down to about 50%, by driving my wifes car most of the time
