Hi CATS,
have just been to one of the installers re dual battery in engine space - not enough space I was told.
There is the aircon refill-valve that sticks out and does not allow for the battery to be mounted level.
Can you please let me have the measurements of your battery (and make).

Deltec SMF 27HCM-680 it says on the label and it seem to measure 30cm long, 17cm wide and 20cm high. The critical thing for me is the height as it JUST miss the bonnet!

Do not believe installers who say "not enough space" when numerous people have had the job done - and can prove it.

I was told the same story on my Gen2, only a 75Ah battery would fit they said. Well Mark Esterhuyse from (what was then) LA Sport did the job, no problems, with the original battery in its original place and the 105 DC battery (supplied by me)

Hi Cats!

Just bought the same battery as yours but I am unable to find the specs on the web. Do you perhaps have it? I asked for a Deep Cycle Battery and this is the model that they supplied to fit into the existing battery tray but I can't confirm it on the web. After much reading, I have decided to go the NL route from Safari Centre, for my DB system ( I had it in my previous van and had never been let down)

I'm also looking at fitting a dual battery system.

I emailed Frontrunner (on Monday) about the dimensions of the Gen3 Battery tray - want to check exactly what size battery it will handle. It is meant to fit a 70Ah deep cycle battery.

The starter (main) battery in my Pajero is 275mm long. A 105Ah Deep Cycle is normally 330mm long, and that will fit in the std battery location. So if the frontrunner battery tray will fit my starter battery, then I'll fit them that way... Starter battery in Aux tray, and Aux Battery in std tray.

I actually checked with the local Deltec branch in Cape Town this afternoon, and the techie confirmed that the one I bought is in fact a 95Ah deep cycle battery suitable for my Engel, two way radios, etc. So it seems that its not off the market. I will try and phone him again and ask to mail me the specs

Just got an answer from Frontrunner....

The battery tray base is 280mm x 180mm... so it should hold the starter battery or a +/- 70Ah deep cycle. Cost is R325.

1. Daar is genoeg plek voor in die Pajero vir 'n 102 amp "deep cycle". Ek besit 'n 2004 3.8 GLS. Ek het my standaard battery tot teen die "fire wall" geskuif en dit deur 90grade gedraai - dit staan nou dwars en die "deep cycle" in die standaard plek gesit. My stelsel werk nou al vir ±4 jaar (het in Angola, Nam, Bots, Zim en Zam getoer) en het tot dusver geen probleme ondervind. Die beheerstelsel is deur 'n plek in Alberton gebou en installeer (op Francois Rossouw se aanbeveling) en het toe saam met die battery ongeveer R2000,00 gekos. 'n Vriend met 'n 2001 3.2 GLS het my installasieroete gevolg - met 'n ander beheerstelsel - en het ook tot dusver geen probleme gehad nie.

This battery is a SEMI DEEP CYCLE battery.

Here is their reply;
The SMF27 HCM 680 which you purchased is a Semi Deep-Cycle Sealed Maintenance Free Battery.

This is commonly used in off road 4x4 applications for winches & back up power for accessories.

The specifications of the battery are as per the attached data sheet.

The battery is designed to provide optimum life where is it is discharged to 50% of rated capacity. (+- 300 cycles)

First off it is necessary to point out that the size (capacity) of the battery is relative to the current you wish to consume.

Current requirement of fridge (wattage) number of lights you use at the same time and length of time you are parked without recharging the battery.

I assume you are using low wattage lights & low consumption fridge?

Before buying the battery you should do a theoretical calculation of your requirement based on the current draw of the appliances and length of time you expect them to run at a time.

I have attached a Deltec Voyage brochure which illustrates the calculation and will provide you with other useful information.

It is our experience that the over & above the dual charging system the battery requires additional charging outside of the vehicle’s electrical system after extended use.

It would depend on the Dual Charging system you have, but based on the standard automotive charging voltages 14.4 -14.6, the alternator is unable to fully charge the battery.

A deep cycle battery needs to be recharged at 5-15% of its rated capacity (i.e. 100a/h at 5 to 15 ampere) and achieve a top of charge voltage of 15.5-15.8 Volts at a charge rate of 5-7.5% at the end of the charge.

Let me go on to say that the alternator / dual charging system will recharge the battery to an extent while you are travelling, again dependent on how long it is able to absorb charge and until the alternator reaches it’s top of charge voltage(14,4-14,6). As the alternator voltage limits the charge to the battery it is unable to recover fully to the former state of charge.

It is advisable to compliment the vehicle battery charging with an independent charger capable of charging the battery as explained above.

We have a charger to suit this requirement - Deltec Auto Pro 10-12 volt at a cost of R1730-00 +vat.
