The Gen1 and Gen2 engine bays are very similar, so this write-up on OuterLimits might interest you.
It involves abit more that your transplant, but it has some good info.
Hi Guys,
I have learnt its a Gen 2, however a Japan import, we have many of those here in Botswana, small differences, h/lamps and of course the small reverse mirror on the left fender.

Hi Guys,
You will all be happy to hear that as we speak the last phase of my GTO motor transplant into my Gen 2 SWB is being completed, namely the wiring of the GTO ECU into my existing wiring. I have attached some new pics to show the Manifold extention that I had made which is essential in the 180 Deg turn of the intake manifold that is un avoidable as if it were left the std way you would have the throttle body sitting inside the car at the passenger side.
I will give a full post back on the competed project listeing all the issues I had to deal with as well as the important feedback on how it performs.
I however would like to put the following out there, if anyone knows if anyone else has done this successfully? I have searched the net extensively and have found many who have considered it, but none that have actually gone through with it. The Red SWB that has the twin turbo motor in is not a GTO motor, but in fact a convertered 3500V6 pajero motor, hense no real mods except for the Turbo's, but GTO motor I have seen nor read about 1 that has been successfully done and spoken about anywhere on the net. Does this mean that I might be the 1st to actually go through with this conversion, that by the way is not as much as an issue as some make out to be.
Anyway hope you all are well and of course enjoying your Pajero's as much as I do.
Cant wait to here from you

Hi Guys,
Well I know its been long awaited, but the transplant is complete. I must say its been a bit of a nightmare seen that no one has done this before and all ground was virgin territory. however I can now say it can be done with awesome results. The car is very strong which can be expected but also drives like a dream. I have not done much milage and only town driving so I cant comment on economy atr this stage. I had also gone back to the manual transmission due to the fact that with the motor running on an after market Spitronics system it does not have the ability to run the transmission (auto) as well. There is a after market computer available for the tranny but I decided to go back to manual to save costs. I will post pics again of the completed project soon. Anybody who wants to know how to do this mod on your Pajero can contact Leon at Superformance Gaborone, on (00267)72399631.
It has been a tough laboursome project but very worth it in the end

Yes, it is a Gen 2 import.
I think those round headlights were only on the SWB.
The GTO engine is going to seriously pimp your truck.
I presume it has the super select 4X4 technology?

Yes its super select 4x4, pimp my truck yes I suppose so, but more for the reason that now when I go on trips into Botswana the untouched side, I will be able to haul with my friends who all have Landcruisers, 1 x GX and 1 x VX. I have always liked being different and am also a Pajero nut.

Steve
I'd love to hear that GTO roaring...
Sorry - "pimped" has a negative connotation too - never meant that
.
Now go out and confuse those cruisers!

No Problem. I will also see when I take the pics if I can upload a vid or at least a link to see and hear the beast. I had an opertunity to take on a Gen2 Evo yesterday and he gave me a good go but when I got to 3rd gear he had no answer, so as a road car its pretty impressive too. robot to robot its so strong that not much can stay with me. Not bad for a 4x4.
I am hoping to get myself a offraod trailer by the end of the year and primarily the power is to tow without having to murder the engine.
Thanks for the interest I appreciate and enjoy it.
N.B. I have done searches on the net and have not found another Pajero with a successfull conversion using the GTO motor, so I am attentively saying that mine could be the first worldwide.
The only one that came close was one in Japan, but following a dissaster startup they abandoned the project, apparently over heating problems. I had read an article on this and apparently they excluded the water pipe from the back of the motor to the front, which in turn actually ensures cold water flow to the heads. their reason for this was that they had no space when turning the manifold around. I have had a spacer (seen on pics earlier in this article) to take care of that problem.
Also when doing the conversion I have used the GTO motor but with parts from both the 3,5 V6 Gen2 motor and the 3,0V6 Gen2 motor, with after market management system. So its quite a pussle, but when you have what you need the conversion is pretty simple. For me however everything was trial and error so it took a long time.
Now thankfully its just have fun and enjoy.

(Moderator note:
For clarity, the heading was changed to Gen 2, since it has been established that the vehicle is in fact a Gen2 Pajero, not a Gen1.
The project would however be valuable to Gen1 owners, since the Gen1 and Gen2 engine bays are just about identical)
