I bought a set of inner/outer cv boot covers from the local Mitsu dealer in PE today. Upon opening them at home I discovered that the outer boot is made from a hard "plastic" type material as opposed to the rubber ones that I am used to, also the inner one is from rubber. I cannot see that this "plastic" boot will endure the stresses/strains to which cv boots are exposed ?????
Can anybody pls confirm that this is in fact correct or whether I should go and exchange it

the hard plastic ones are of extremely good quality - hence the price. My pajero has 260'000km on and the outers still have the original mitsu hard plastic ones on. The inners don't last that long and they are the usual rubber ones.
these outers are the original

Hi Nico
Welcome here, you have been given the right set of boots, both inner and outer. Be very carefull with the outer joints as they are not available as a replacement part and Mitsu will charge you ovr R 7k for a replacement shaft
. One would think that the plastic type is sub standard but as Marius said it is good stuff and lasts very well. If one looks after the joints they do not fail as easy as the inners as they are of the 3pot design and can stand a lot of hard use. Clean and lubricate them if the old boot was torn otherwise just top up the grease and replace. I have replaced my inner cvs not too long ago and the outer ones were still fine after 350k km.
Good luck
