Hi guys
The Flywheel Damper (it appears this component consists partly of rubber) has disintegrated on my 3.2 DID. The past 2 years we did experience a slight knock (similar to play in a worn universal/c.v. joint on a drives haft) in the drive train (on accelerating immediately after slacking off). Could never establish where along the drive train this "knock" was sourced from. 2 things: My mechanic claims the knock was sourced from the damper flywheel that was busy going. Is this true? How could a flywheel have 'play"? Second question is: Are there alternatives to this part because the agents are quoting me R 12,000.00 (VAT excl.) for a new one....a lot of money to pay on a 2003 vehicle...
Your comments are appreciated,
Quentin
The flywheel/clutch combination from a 4M40 (2.8 TD) is a direct bolt-on at less than half the price. The increased vibration is negligible IMHO.
Replace the release bearing, crank seal, gearbox input shaft seal & clutch cylinder seals with the saved money while you are in there.

What Marius said.
Try Parthunt in Pretoria for a flywheel.
Just be aware that there are two diameter flywheels available for the 4m4* engines.
If you change size, you will need the correct mounting plate (between bell housing and engine) as well.
The dual mass flywheel is a "nice-to-have".
I have the solid (off a 4m40) flywheel and clutch, which is as smooth as anything I've driven.

This is a very concerning post, if possible would be nice to get a better description of the noise.
Ive got something similar which has been discussed on another post, but basically was decided that it was something to do with fuel in the tank moving around. This is most noticeable at 3/4 tank.
What is the mileage on yours as a matter of interest?
Thanks

Don't worry too much, Gerard. Your 2006 would be an automatic, so it would not have a dual mass flywheel like the manual. It has a drive plate that connects the engine and transmission.

I'm pretty sure your issue is the fuel tank (which is not really a problem)... have you ever noticed the "knock" sound at say 1/4 tank? I never have.maccarron wrote:This is a very concerning post, if possible would be nice to get a better description of the noise.

Greg, absolutely right I havent either, but its definitely the same problem as you describe on the other forum.

Hi .Have not seen that particular flywheel but have replaced numerous toyota (3l /5l/ 1kz) two piece flywheels. There flywheel contains a heavy duty clutch and torque coil springs designed to take the whip out of the drivetrain at lower speeds. The flywheel isnt serviceable. An aftermarket one piece flywheel and suitable clutch kit is available here.Maybe something like that is an option for you
Thanks Marius. We eventually had a solid unit built. As strong as a truck. IS Parthunt useful for other components e.g. brake discs, engine/gearbox mountings?4ePajero wrote:What Marius said.

thanks Digger. Just curious, at what kind of price?digger wrote:Hi .Have not seen that particular flywheel but have replaced numerous toyota (3l /5l/ 1kz) two piece flywheels. There flywheel contains a heavy duty clutch and torque coil springs designed to take the whip out of the drivetrain at lower speeds. The flywheel isnt serviceable. An aftermarket one piece flywheel and suitable clutch kit is available here.Maybe something like that is an option for you
