Aircon filter
I need some advice please. I drive a 2008 3.s GLS.
My question is ; Where is the aircon filter located and can I clean it myself?
if i travel on a dirt road and use the aircon, it smels of dust for week afterwards.

It's called the pollen filter that filters the air coming in to the cabin. It can't (you can try but not recommended) be cleaned, only replaced. It is helluva expensive.

The reason for the dusty smell is that the aircon evaporator (looks like a small radiator in the dash) gets really cool and then condensation occurs on it. The dust then sticks to this moisture. Only way to get it out is to let the car go through cycles of no aircon and lots of heat and high blower setting and then using aircon on cold setting with low blower setting. This alternates hot dry blowing away and getting some condensate to flush away the dust on the cold setting. Hope it makes sense.

Re: Aircon filter
Hi Charles,

The filter is located behind the glove box (i have a gen 3 and its behind the lower glove box; not sure if your model is similar inside). If you can take it out you should be able to dust off leaves, etc that get sucked in but eventually it gets too clogged with dust and needs to be replaced. If you have your car serviced at the agents then instruct them to do it.

I took mine to Harrack in JHB as the AC was not working properly and they took out the filter for me and it is probably 99% blocked! Have to get a new one from the agents at R470!

It is situated behind the glovebox, you squizee the side of the glovebox towards each other and the box should hook out of the retaining slots on the sides. Unscrew the filter (x2 star screws) making sure what side is up&down. Blow dust out with high press air. Sometimes if the filter is too clogged you will keep getting the dusty smell in the cabin, only way to fix is to replave. Mitsu Pta - Brooklyn = R 284,11 ex vat
