Installing a HiLift Jack to your Gen 1's bonnet
Another project I cajoled my friend Brian into doing...
The mounts are designed by HiLift for mounting their jacks to any available part of a vehicle. I chose the hood for a couple of reasons: Firstly, I'd seen it on a Jeep CJ7, and thought it looked good.. Secondly, when I had been in deep mud where I might need to take it off to use it as a winch, I've generally been up to my bumpers in it.. so this made a lot of sense.. anyway, here we go.

1: See where you're going to mount it.. use pencil to mark it, as you might need to change the holes as you don't want the backplates underneath to be below the support beams on the underside of the hood cover.

1a. Make sure if you lift the bonnet, the jack is just far enough from the windscreen that it has a few inches of clearance when raised all the way.

2. Remove the oil splatter canvas.. it has little twist knobs.
3. Drill the appropriate holes through the bonnet and attach washers and nuts below.
4. Grind off the excess length.

5. Replace oil cloth to the bottom of the bonnet.
6. and you're done.

has it put any dents in your hood yet? from rough bumps or corugated roads?

Re: Installing a HiLift Jack to your Gen 1's bonnet
I have a few suggestions for anybody who is contemplating this project.
  • I would use mounting positions that specifically go though the 'support beams' on the underside of the bonnet.
  • alternatively, I would use flat bar on the underside in stead of washers, to spread the load.
  • those drilled holes will have to be protected from rust. Proper etching primer and best quality paint.
A few hundred km of badly corrugated roads, and you might just have cracks propagating from the drilled holes.

No criticism, bit I personally (that's just me) would look for a more solid and unobtrusive place to mount the jack.
The spare wheel carrier is eg more suited in my opinion.

well, I guess I will have to make mounting provisions on my bullbar then... I am just trying to get a little more weight forward vs putting it all on the back 3 feet past the back axle...
