2H or 4H
Hi all

I'm wondering whether to leave the lever in 2H or 4H for everyday driving.

What do you guy's drive in?

BTW,on an obstacle course,is 4H ok? Not a serious course,quarry.

Any advice for a noob?

thanks

Re: 2H or 4H
I use 2H for tar... 4HLc for general gravel roads and most sand driving, 4Llc for most other offroading. I almost never use 4H strangley enough, unless the tar roads are VERY wet.

4H on tar is pretty noisy, and there's no need to have additional wear on components when not necessary. If I haven't done any driving off of the tar for quite a while I just pop it into 4H to keep things lubricated.

I use much the same as Simon, but use 4H every time it rains and also some times when towing my Xplorer through mountain passes to give some extra stability with side winds etc. My 4H is as quiet as 2H and I often forget to put it back in 2H after using. It does have a negative effect on your fuel consumption to drive in 4H instead of 2H, but only slightly.

Same as Simon and CATS. :D

4H used exclusively for wet tar roads, like this morning.

Same as Simon, CATS and ghost_traffic, but I always engage 4H on wet tar. On gravel I always engage 4HLc.

Low range is safer on obstacles, therefore why not use it? You do not intend to race through obstacles (unless of course it is a race!), so you could just as well do it the safest way. You do have much better control in low range, and you passengers will probably feel safer is the car is not "free-wheeling" (i.e. running without compression) in risky situations.

Having moved across from Subaru Forester to Paj (and still driving Subaru Impreza) I'm pretty much a dyed-in-the-wool 4H fan.

Got the Paj second hand with 94K on the clock and so far have done 10,000km - nothing's fallen off yet - hopefully not speaking too soon here!

Can't comment on consumption effects as we're always in 4H - might do a tank or 3 in 2H to check. Around town in 90% start/stop driving (SWAMBO around town) we average 13/14 l/100km; on open road with trailer & 3 or 4 adults we get 9/10 l/100km - so pretty happy all round.

Cheers
Tom

Re: 2H or 4H
2H = Every day
4H = In rain on asphalt and gravel roads
4HLc = Sand trails/obstacles
4LLc = Rock obstacles
4LLc + Diff Lock = Steep inclines/declines with loose "road" surface

Its an interesting debate, but I see some used 4HLc on dust and others 4H. I guess there are dust roads and dust roads - but sometimes you get a nice graded road where its easy to drive at 100km/h, would Lc still be advocated in such a situation?
