Good morning all
Can anybody please shed some light on the following. It is my understanding that all cars are at manufacture provided with vin number? This then enables one to order the correct spares for the that car by quoting the vin number. All engines have a serial number (model number & an extension) which is listed with the vin number on your registration certificate. My pajero is a 1998 model. During the course of 2009 the original owner blew the original engina and had 2nd engine from a scrapped Pajero fitted instead of having the origianl engine repaired. Obviously the vin number spares specifications refer to the original engine etc.
Why is it that Mitshubishi cannot work backwards from the engine number to the vin number and thereby give me the year and model of the vehicle to which that engine was originally fitted. This will then give me a clearer picture in what condition the "perfectly good 2nd hand engine " is realy in. I have now spent about three weeks of being yerked around by Mitshubishi and cannot get the information out of them not even a polite call back or email. Surely the engine number has to have some importance and why in this age of computer technology and data bases with cross linked refernces can they not give me the year and model in which this engine was fitted?
Tks
Ben,
Good question. I had the same question posed to MB about my "platkar".
I believe dealers are hesitant to be involved beyond warranty periods, as such involvement could get them in the middle of legal disputes. They would also like to limit their admin costs to the essential minimum, I guess...
