Hi SimonB,

Complements, 8-) very nice looking and explenation

You mentioned it would be cheaper if you tackeled it differently; how would you have done it differant if you have to do-over?

Trying to find where I said it would be cheaper

Certainly not cheaper but there are a couple of things I might have done differently. The main thing is the electrics. They do not work positioned as they are. also the floor of the draw needs reinforcing. Maybe get myself set up with TIG welding and actually weld the frame, rather than using the connectors. But still, am quite happy.

Re: Gen2 LWB Packing System and Fridge Slide
Hi Simon,

First off... thanks for posting your DIY :)

I am thinking about doing a DIY packing system for my Gens SWB. I like the idea of using aluminium square tubing with the quick connectors.

I had a look at some Frontrunner packing systems over the weekend, and they are extremely heavy (steel of course)... I'd guess over 50kg.

Do you have any idea of how much your system weighs? Also was most of the weight from the frame or the wood?

Also, for your drawer.... do your runners only mount on two points per side? I am thinking of making a system with the fridge on one side, and two drawers on the other side. I am just worried that the runners for the fridge might need more mounting points than 2 per side?

Thanks,
Cheers

The total weight Is around 20kilos, of which the plywood is probably the 60% of that, and I can easily lift it into and out of the car by myself (although it is still a complete schlep to unbolt it from the floor of the car.

The slides mount at 2 points per slide for the drawer. You will see however, I have 3 points per side for the fridge slide. If you want to make a side by side packing system then I would probably mount the fridge slide onto a horizontal crosspiece, rather than a vertical one, although it will probably need a vertical brace.

Just a word of advice to consider in your designs though... never use a 4 way cross piece if you can avoid it. Always use use a full length piece of alu, and then use two braces.

Thanks Simon...

I'm going to figure out the best way to mount the fridge slide, and go from there... either a braced horizontal bar, or 3 vertical bars.

Re: Gen2 LWB Packing System and Fridge Slide
Hi Simon
Suppose I could have sent you a PM but there might be other members interested.
I think you have a superb design for a Gen2 drawer system and am in the process of planning my own project along those lines.
What I would like to know is what your considerations were, if any, in placing the freezer on the lefthand side, facing forwards. To my mind there might be an advantage for me to place it on the righthand side so one does not get cramped between the extended fridge (pulled out) and the open door? Also it seems there might be a space gain as on the right there seems to be less space to lose between the fridge and the wheel arch ( extention?) - don't know what it is situated between the arch and the rear door?

I am also considering placing a 40l plastic water container in the open space behind the fridge (between fridge and rear seat) but am worried about a possible weight imbalance if both the fridge and container are fully laden. One would obviously have other stuff packed on te other side but it is unlikely to weigh the same as the fridge and container. Do you think the uneven weight distribution might be a problem?

Thank you.

Sorry for the late reply.

Regarding placing the freezer on the LHS: In my mind it is more practical there because you can get access to the fridge on both sides. Also when you are trying to lift a heavily loaded fridge into position it requires two people to get it into place. Much easier if you do it from the sides. In addition If the fridge is on the RHS you can't get access to the small amount of space above the wheel arches because of the width of the rear aircon duct. On my travels I have my recovery kit and first aid kit (and any other small items that I need access to and which wont block the fridge vents) in the section above the LHS wheel arch between the fridge and the window.

I wouldn't worry too much about the weight of the water container. 40 kilos isn't all THAT heavy and weight distribution shouldn't be a problem, especially if you can find one of those containers that are pretty flat.

Good luck!

Hi Simon
Fridge on lefthand side makes a lot of sense! Now can carry on with planning.

Thank you!

Re: Gen2 LWB Packing System and Fridge Slide
Hi Simon
Sorry to bother you again but am in advanced stage of planning my drawer system and need some of your expertise. :?
First off, because I would like to make my drawer deeper for the same height, do you think I could replace the front (door side) bottom alu 25mm square tube cross bar (of the frame) with a 30mm flat bar? This would allow me +-20mm more for my drawer depth but do you think it would deminish the overall strength of the frame unacceptably? Maybe if I put in a few flat bar braces on the sides of the frame?
Secondly, did you ever consider fitting a cargo barrier to stop goods flying to the front on heavy braking or do you strap everything down? If one would like to fit a cargo barrier how would you secure it without drilling holes?
Not trying to quiz you but you seem to have thought through your design very well and may very well have considered these aspects and discarded them as impractical. :?:
Thank you once again!

I don't know how I missed this post, so sorry for the month late response

I don't think it will affect the overall strength very much, as long as the sides are properly braced.

I haven't but it is something I would like to do. I saw an elegant solution on Kevin's (on this forum) Pajero where they modified a Prado cargo barrier. Not sure how the bottom was fixed but the top was fixed with a bracket bolted down behind the rear seat belt mounting. (Hmmm I've now had another idea... let me get back to you on that  )

the one thing I didn't think clearly through is the electrics, and something else I want to change is somewhere to permanently mount my compressor.
