Gerhard,
I honestly set out to find the perfect DiD and allowed myself a rather handsome budget as well.
BUT
If you can honestly look at my list on top and say that there is a DiD that I should rather buy than the V6, then please explain your reasoning to me. That is actually the true reason of this post: Am I missing something that you gents can point out to me.
The reputation (of economy and reliability) of the Di-D has caused it to be priced way above the petrol-engined versions.
If you do a cost comparison between the two over the life of your new purchase, taking
It then boils down to personal preference, I suppose.
I personally find that one gets used to the fixed re-payment instalment, but it pains to fill a tank for a vehicle returning 18-20 l/100 km.

Gerhard,
As long as I can assure that the 90k timing belt service gets done under the maint contract, then all is well as far as servicing costs go.
Just like one can get used to monthly installments, can one get used to the fuel bill. I throw my petrol card at it and never look at the expense again.
As far as general driving and operation goes: I firmly believe that the 3.8V6 is better mated to the autobox and electronic control devices, than the sister DiD is.
I have often advised what you are preaching here: there isn't a huge difference in operating cost between the two and the same goes for ability and drive characteristics.
The only thing that is somewhat worrying about the red Pajero under discussion is just that - RED. I have consulted the females in my greater family and they all agree it "looks" better than the (default) white Pajero. Practically it sure isn't as user friendly as white. Maybe this one will find it's way into my stable and maybe I'll run a thread at some time in the future about colour pros and cons.
There is a 350kg weight penalty to go LWB, but a think the extra 34kw should take care of that - I hope.

I have a red pajero and it shows dirt and scratches far more than white/silver.
It is the prettiest colour of the lot though (except maybe for the brownish one - like the amarok)

That's not quite what I said.RoelfleRoux wrote: I have often advised what you are preaching here: there isn't a huge difference in operating cost between the two ....

I said the total cost of ownership for the two second hand vehicles should not differ much over say a 5-yr ownership period.
- The cost of a second hand petrol engined Pajero is lower than the cost of a second hand diesel engined engine.
- It is an urban myth that diesel engines are expensive to service (compared to petrol engines).
- My personal experience is that it is easier and cheaper to maintain and service a diesel engine, compared to petrol engines. If it is done by a dealer or other workshop, it could be different. If you have a service plan, it's immaterial.
- Fuel costs for the Di-D will be ±33% less.
- Residual (future trade-in) value for the Di-D will be proportionally higher than the petrol (± same % difference as when you bought it)
People often have to ask me whether my Touareg has a petrol or a diesel engine.
One classic quote was: "This thing's engine has so much torque, one could think it is a diesel!"
Hmmm, now it is starting to make sense, just be careful they show their scratches very easily

My very first new car, 1983 VW Passat Sedan 1.6 GLS, was that colour. I remember the pain I felt at the discovery of every new little scratch.
Oh well... time will tell. Maybe I'll buy this one and maybe it will scratch
