Why did you clean the EGR valve and what did this entail?

Re: New Pajero owner with questions
Hi Cats

Since I had to remove to replace the tappet cover gasket, I noticed that the valve was packed with a oily soot. I cleaned the valve with petrol, but had to let the one side soak to be able to disvolve it.I them blew the unit clean with air and let dry before installing. I also cleaned the inlet to the manifold with a cloth. I was tempted to remove this as well and clean, but had not read anything about it being done and honestly, this is my first diesel, so know very littleabout them. Give me a petrol and I am okay.

While I had the cover off,I also checked the top tensioner and this was still okay. All seems fine with the chain as well.

Does anybode know what effect this soot will have on the moter preformance?

I would think that this soot would have no negative performance effect but will probably make for a slightly smokier exhaust. In fact I think if the EGR is totally blocked off it will actually increase performance at the cost of a more smokie emmision. The EGR only reburn some of your old exhaust gasses to make it cleaner before going out. Anyway that is my understanding of it all. I was just curious as to why you wanted to clean it as my EGT probe goes into the manifold at the EGR part of it and I also noticed some sooty build up there when removing the probe. The soot has always worried me as I reckon that the soot must also build up in the exhaust? My exhaust is still the factory original and I am now standing on 220 000km so there is surely some blockage in there? :? Anyway, they say don't scratch where it doesn't itch so I must probably leave it be.

By the way my intercooler has also got a knock somewhere in its life and has the bottom part bend up slightly, but at R5000 for a new one I am living with it as I believe, in my case, it is more cosmetic than performance robbing.

Re: New Pajero owner with questions
Hi Cats

I must admit that I know very little about diesel motors. I just cleaned as I felt that this should not be there. I have noticed over the last 2 days that at startup I do not have the little smoke from the exhaust that I used to have

This seems to have gone. I have also been told that blokking off the EGR helps with performance and solves problems.

Regarding the intercooler, mine was damaged about 40 percent and this was a definite worthwhile expenditure of money. I managed to find one for R850 from a wrekker that had a rolled 2006 SWB and this had made a definite improvement. I will be testing consumption on the long weekend on atrip to Haartenbos.
Has made the motor rev easier and a lot more responsive
