Pajero iO rear arm rubbers?

When going over minor uneven road surfaces my iO makes a matalish sound. I suspected the shocks and took it to Speedy to check it out. I replaced the shocks about 6 months ago. (Ome which Speedy installed for me).

No faults were found on the shocks. While the car was on the ramp the techie pulled the body down to make the shocks contract and expand again. We noticed movement (back and forth) in the "joint" of the arm that holds the axle. See pics. The one pic is of the arm and the second a close-up of the joint. There is a rubber inside the joint.

My question: Is there suppose to be "play" (forward/backwards) in the joint?

So, after R 1800 the clunking noise remains.

I had the rubbers replaced, but to no avail. The rubbers themselves was not that expensive, but the labour  . They had to send it to someone else to "press" in. I can, however feel that the rear end is more stable. When in a corner with uneven surface it used to feel "loose".

Did you dismantle the entire rear suspension?
If there is a metallic noise, there should be evidence of the metal-metal contact.
There are shock absorber outlets that have shock-testing equipment. They shake the wheels up and down.
If you can get the iO onto one of those, you might just replicate the noise and identify the source.

Hi Jonny

Just check that if your "silencer sheet" is fitted between your spring and body. When I did my lift, the guy doing the fitment "forgot" to replace it resulting in a "clunk"

Did you replace all 8 bushes? I recently got a quote for R1200 for the bushes and R1050 for the labour.

Jaco,

No, only the lower arm bushes. 4 in total, but as I said before the clunk sound is still there.

I do however think the clunk might come from the front left wheel. It's very difficult to isolate exactly where the sound comes from.

Do you perhaps have a sketch of the front suspension for me?

I've got it, will post it tonight.

Have you had your upper control arm bushes tested? Why did you not replace them as well?

Some HIQ's offer a suspension test @ R80 front and @ R60 rear. I think is worth a try and might save you some money rather than doing experimental surgery.

I'm taking mine on saterday for the full test. My local bosch will do a full nut and bolt service with the minor service next week.

BTW Gabriel Safari shocks fit the IO (rear only) perfectly. The safari shocks are much cheaper than the OE or KYB shocks.

Jaco,

I am not sure if both arms' rubbers were replaced. I remember seeing 4 rubbers, but I'm not sure. I'll have to ask the mechanic.

I will try to find out from HiQ here if they do the suspension tests, because the "clunk" drives me nuts. I'am more and more convinced the problem is at the front left.

Please post the front suspension drawing. Thanks again.

J.

So the "clunk clunk continues.

I found a workshop that tested the shocks. I don't know if this was the "suspension test" JacoV referred to. The HiQ guys just looked at me as if I was from Mars when mentioning a "suspension test".

The mechanic at the workshop said it could be the ball joints.

Could he be right? It sounds expensive.
