4 Pajero DiD questions
Hi Chaps

I have a 2006 LWB DiD GLX. I have had some questions on my mind for a while now, so here goes:

1. I bought my paj with 265/75R16 tyres. According to the tyre pressure sticker on the driver's door the tyres should actually be 265/70R16. What are the pros and cons of my larger tyres in respect to fuel consumption, lock-up clutch and tyre pressures?

2. From time to time the engine oil pressure light come on when the vehicle is idling. As soon as some the engine revs go up the light goes off. Is this normal? This only happens about once a month. The oil level on the dipstick is correct.

3.My tyres have been squeeling the last 2000km. The tread is is very good, but when I go around a corner the tyres are very noisy. I've had the wheel alignment re-adjusted but now it's even worse. The noise is more evident on smoother tar.

4. The transmission temperature light comes on for a split second now and then when the paj is idling . This usually happens in DRIVE at a red traffic light. It never happened until after I topped the transmission oil up about 2 months ago. The light never stays on, though.

Any answers would be great! Thanks in advance! :P

Cheers

Re: 4 Pajero DiD questions
1) - No opinion to offer -

2)Are you sure it is the oil PRESSURE light and not the oil LEVEL light. Please make sure of that one. If it's the level light, put in some more oil. Get the level up to about 5mm above the full mark. If it is the oil pressure light - take it very seriously and come to the bottom of it.

3)All my Pajeros have had the squealing-tyre syndrome. Don't read too much into it.

4)The tranny light should also worry you. If it is from just after adding oil, it could be that you have two not fully compatible oil-types in there. Bold4e has a very good thread going on tranny oils - search for and have a look at it. If it was my Pajero, I would seriously consider a gearbox oil change.

Re: 4 Pajero DiD questions
Hi Superairborne,

The tyre size is nothing to be worried about. Your Pajero will have a bit longer legs. The Speedo wil read about 3% slower for the same revolutions which will bring you closer to real speed because most Pajeros is under reading between 4% and 8% on its speedo.

Make sure you use a good quality engine oil. I prefer Delo 400 multigrade 15W - 40 (Not Delo Gold).

I suggest that you change your Automatic Transmission fluid with new fluid. Make sure you drain all old fluid. See procedure in the manual. The filter must also be replaced. My opinion is to use Dexron VI (will cost you at lot more than Dexron III but it is a much better fluid). The oil supplied by the Mutsubishi dealers is also a Dexron III spec oil. See my point about Automatic transmission fluids and what high ATF temperatures can do to your Automatic transmission.

Change your ATF at least every 100 000km and ever sooner it you tow a lot or do a lot of 4X4 driving.

ATF (even Dexron XI is a lot cheaper than rebuilding the transmission.

Re: 4 Pajero DiD questions
Maybe it is safest to get the ATF from Mitsubishi themselves? I don't think it is any more expensive, and then you know it is the right stuff.

Good luck getting ANYTHING over a Pajero spares counter :x

Assuming they know the difference between Automatic Transmission Fluid and Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.
Re: 4 Pajero DiD questions
Thx everyone for the responses. I will attend to the ATF soonest even though it was changed by mitsu just 22000km ago.

I do use Delo 400 engine oil. I agree it's great!!

Super,

Did you clear-up the oil level light vs oil pressure light question?

Off topic (if I may): Are you happy with the after market cruise control on your car?

Re: 4 Pajero DiD questions
oil lights

amber/orange = oil level (not too bad, just overfill with 500ml engine oil
red = oil pressure (very bad - no oil pressure means blown motor very shortly!)

It may be that the infamous oil pressure sensor may be packing up. It sits on the block between the turbo and engine block. A real PITA to get to. It fatigues and the middle plastic part separates from the outer metal housing and it spews oil at an alarming rate. If it wasn't for the low oil level light I would have lost my engine shortly after I bought the car.
Re: 4 Pajero DiD questions
Roelf,

I think it's the oil level light (orange).

I'm very happy with the cruise control. I use it every time I take the Paj on the open road.

Re: 4 Pajero DiD questions
Super,

I hope you are less worried about your Pajero now, than before you started this thread.

I may be a little warped at the moment in my trust (or lack thereof) of servicing agents (you must have seen the threads on parts availability on this forum), but how do you know they ACTUALLY did replace the ATF 22k ago?

As far as the tyre squeal goes:
As students we designed and built a racing pedal car. When it got to the steering mechanisms we did some research (in a library  - no Google or Wikipedia in the 70's). We came across something called the "Ackermann Angle" and we implemented some of those principles in the basic design of the pedal car's steering.

I suggest you give it a quick search on the Net - I did early this morning and there is plenty to read.

Cheers
