Whining noise in Gearbox
Hi Guys,

I recently bought my SWB 97 3,0 V6 manual. I notice the vehicle making a whining noise - I suspect to come from the gearbox - at very low speed in second when you apply sudden torque, as you start to accelerate. This noise is the same through all the ranges - 2H - 4Llc. Also a slight whine in fifth all the way up to around 120km/h when I guess the ambient noise overrides it(This test off course done in 2H 8-) ). Otherwise the gearshift through all the gears are smooth, and also so for shifting into 4H and further down. Do you guys think this might be low or old fluids, or do I have a genuine transmission problem here?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Marius!

Will do so and come back with an answer. It seems only to be second gear for the first instance as I apply sudden torque (say the first 10m of travel) until the revs climb a bit higher. And then off course also in fifth as stated.
Thanks again.

The mitsu manual boxes LOVE caltex easyshift - but they don't make it anymore. If you can find some, buy lots!

Re: Whining noise in Gearbox
Had a recon done on my auto box about two months ago. Did the same as yours before the recon. But it was not the reason for the recon. Not time to panic. It still does the same from time to time (only in 1st). I did ask about it and was told it is the torgue gear, but sometimes also the transfer box, depending on whether 4H or 2H. Your box does it in 4H and 2H, thus probably relates to the torgue gear. A lot they told me about a couplers, rings and a few other aspects. They told me it was not serious, many 4x4 gearboxes do it. I do not know the difference, so I have left it. In your case it seems different as mine is only in 1st, and only under some conditions. Never beyond that.

S-Rogers,

Mine also has a bit of a whine at low revs on all gears, except fourth.

My machanic said is is probably a bit of roughness of one of the gears in the gearbox, and is not fatal - will need to redo the box one day when the engine goes or if the noise levels increases drastically. The fact that 4th gear is quiet is important - because that gear is direct (1:1) - the others gear up or down - and that is when they pick up the "rough" gear. If your's is quiet in fourth, I would suggest you may have the same issue.

Obviously an opinion from a specialist is needed, but beware of a greedy one - it CAN be fixed, but the question is whether it NEED to be fixed...

Thanks alot Anton :)

I will take care with new fluids, and hopefully it won't become a bother soon.

All the best
