3.2 top timing guide
Decided to start doing some maintenance on the pajero. 203500 km on the clock and I have no service history so cannot say what has been replaced sofar.

After my last outing, I heard a terrible sound from the engine area. it sounded like a can of loose bolts in the front area of the engine. :?: :?: :?:

I imeadiately thought top timing chain guide due to kilo's. I remember seeing that this looked good still when I did the tappet cover rubber seal a few thousand kilo"s ago, but bought a new one anyway.

what I did notice was that the old one showed very little signs of wear, but replaced anyway

While i has this all off, I noticed that there was a little oily substance on the inlet air pipe from the air filter. I cleaned this and this is what came out. Is this normal?

I also noticed that the inlet manifold was packed witht he same oily residue. I plan to remove and clean and also blank off the egr

The oil is normal (crank case ventilation), but the gunk you have in there is not good.
Are those stones? sand?

Check that your air cleaner and its cover are fitted properly.

Re: 3.2 top timing guide
Hi Gerhard

That is actually a fine powder type of particle that has flaked together. If I rub that between my fingers, it is feels smooth and oily. I cleaner the hose by blocking the end off and washing out with petrol. This is what was loosened and deposited in the petrol solution after a few shakes of the pipe.

I have checked the air cleaner and covers and all are correct. I replaced air filter at !93000 km and checking it now, it is not that dirty. Can see that it has trapped dirt, but the top side is still very pink in colour.

I am not sure if this is just the way the gunk has collected due to the petrol used to clean the pipe.

When i checked the pipe one side was lined with sooty gunk. that is why I cleaned. intend to remove the inlet manifold and clean this as well later.

Marius

This is planned as soon as I have made the plates. Also cat removal, intake manifold cleaned, oil change and diff oil.

See you have done most of this already.

Re: 3.2 top timing guide
jip. all that is done.

Next on my list is a catch can and electric fan for the intercooler that sits in a low airflow area. Maybe even a water squirter on the intercooler activated by full throttle.

Some people can just not keep their hands still hey! My 2001 Pajero and 4EPikanin is almost the same age and mileage and I have yet to start tinkering on anything inside the engine bay. I say let good be left alone and just fill up with diesel and regular oil changes with proper oil.

Anyway, maybe I am also a slight liar as I have also done the top timing chain guide and it was totally gone when removed, so I also tinker every now and again

I learn by tinkering.

The fan for the intercooler is not a major mod and will definitely help cooler air into the engine.

Lots of tinkering on the Gen1 required, if you need more learning ... :D

Lots of space in the workshop. Just fund the parts.
