Pajero Gen 3 Click click in 4x4
Note

If you have an irregular click click when in 4H, 4HLc or 4LLc then check the CV joint on the front propshaft on the transfer case side.

Mine is stuffed!

waiting on Mr Propshaft to see if he can make a plan to repair or replace with a U-Joint.

Waldo Fourie?

Cost of part plus courier will most probably be a lot!

What does Mr Propshaft quote?

Mitsubishi wants R3521 excl vat (PE has one that can be shipped overnight or 2 days max)
Mr Propshaft wants R2100 excl vat (replace CV with UJ via welding existing yoke to new UJ)
Parthunt wants R1500 for a second hand one - PITA to make sure I get the correct one and it may fail shortly after. Plus waiting time and courier costs.

I asked Mr Propshaft to be honest and tell me how he feels about welding the yoke. He sounded confident of his CO2 welding and reports no comebacks to date. Paired with that and the auto torque converter acting as shock absorber, I gave Mr Propshaft the go-ahead to fix the shaft.

I don't have before pics but I'll post a pic of the refurbed shaft once it's done.

All in R2223 for cutting out the CV, putting in a new UJ and servicing the existing UJ on the other end, plus balance, clean and paint.

In my opinion a good price for what seems like an outstanding job.

I understand why the modern trend is to install high speed CV joints in prop shafts, but cannot agree with it, especially on independant suspensions, where the prop shaft angle is mild and movement is minimal.
A U-joint is maybe not as smooth as a CV joint, but it has to be cheaper and most of all, it is easy to service / repair.

The movement on the pajero is minimal as the only play on the shaft will be the give on the transfer case and front diff mountings.

I'm just glad it wasn't the rear shaft that played up as that is a carbon fibre shaft and I would have had to ask Mr Propshaft to make me an entire new shaft of steel.

Some more pics attached.
