WOW, I also want some of the stuff you smoked when you decided to strip that box :o .

Two lessons leant from this post:
1)There are a few very gifted members on this forum - and thanks to them for sharing.
2)I'm never going to drive my car ever again - how on earth can I allow 184kw of pure beauty to dissapear into that clockspring factory and come out the other side with rubber spinning up a steep, low range, climb?

I try to work only on things I understand.
I don't understand how auto boxes work, so I don't work on them :D

Re: 3.2 Did Autobox v5A51 strip
In short this is what happened:
  • Left car in November at "park and sell" to try and sell the car
  • sold the car myself in Jan. New owner picked up the car from park and sell and drove to Maputo. Complained about lights not working, cutting out, etc
  • phoned park and sell. Sit the battery kept draining after two days, auto electrician did work and replaced battery
  • I went to fetch car from new owner: major electrical problems - almost nothing worked - a/c, lights, wipers, ABS, etc, etc - found culprit - MAIN 120A fuse blown. Replaced this and other fuses that were in wrong places/blown. Everything back to normal. Found small curent flowing... Traced to possible problem at radio. Electrical all working and tested fine BUT
  • Gearbox went in limp mode from time to time and would not engage Reverse first thing int he morning.
  • Played around, found that once box is heated up everything is fine
  • Took for computer reset - thought it was due to electrical problems
[*}Stil the same... check oil - brownish.. decided I will drain and replace filter
  • As I prepared for this suggestions where made that it could be sticky solenoid due to the long stand and the dirty oil
  • Decided to pull the valvebody and clean up everything while we replace the oil
  • Made the discovery of the pieces in the sump (non-metal)
  • Hoped that this would be considered normal wear and tear pieces, put new filter and new oil
  • Stil the same problem - no Reverse.

    In Short the symptoms:
No Reverse.. Shocks in Drive, Shifts fine and then suddenly shocks and goes into limp mode - meaning I only have 3rd gear. As soon as it is hot, I Switch of wait a few second, switch on and everything is fine - no shocks shifts fine even in Tiptronic and kickdown. Reverse would also work sometimes after this..

    Hope this helps...

Just wondering what issues you box gave before you decided to open it up??

I have a look at the service manual for the autobox, there are 704 pages just relating to the INVECS II box....

142 pages just on the autobox overhaul itself, I am very interested to see how one goes about overhauling one!!

Re: 3.2 Did Autobox v5A51 strip
Ok friends I feel some pressure to get this box going, but I am pressed for time to get this car going so I am considering the following: Buying a second hand box and get the car going. In the meanwhile I will rebuild the old box and then do a swap to see if it is working...

BUT now I need some help - are all the 5Va51 boxes the same in terms of ratios, etc. I can get a 5VA51 box from a later model 3.8 - wil that work?

3.2 Did Autobox v5A51 strip
A box that acts fine and then instantly goes funny still sounds to me like an electrical issue.

The 3.8 is not ideal as it has shorter ratios. You will accelerate a lot quicker but at 120km/h the engine may be at too high revs.

Can a 3.8 owner comment on rpms at 120?

Perhaps, maybe the box is the same and the diffs are different on the petrol.
Avoid hassles and get a box from a diesel should you go down that route.

Whatever you do try to get a box complete with wiring harnass and computer and get an auto electrician to go through as much of the wiring and connectors as possible when the box is out.

I still think you should have perhaps try to troubleshoot the electrics some more before opening the box...... Unless you find an obvious fault in the mechanics of the opened box.

Ilec999,

Sterling article!!! Some questions:

a. What made you decide to do the strip - symptoms, faulty shift or what?

b. Are you going to assemble the box yourself?

c. If YES, more photos please.

d. Will it be possible to get all the dissasembly in one article so that I can make my own reference booklet? I am a LBC person (long before computers) and at times battle to get / save info for future use.

I am 99% sure it is not electrical - I really hoped that this was the case - but the clear evidence of the "linings" int he oil proved that we have a clutch issue. This is also consistent with most other opinions. If I fit a second hand box this will prove or disprove this theory. I will update.

It is no CONSISTENTLY doing the same thing - incorrect shifting when cold and correct shifting when hot. And NO reverse.. I lost reverse completely - I think reverse is in the bottom of the oil pan - all that shiny sandpaper bits..

Re: 3.2 Did Autobox v5A51 strip
My main concern is also the ratios - but according to ALL the documentation I could find the ratios of all the boxes are the same - I think the difference in ratios must be in the diff's ( i can;t imagine the transfer case having different ratios)
Revs at 120 will thus not prove this as the diff ratios can still differ.
I am more concerned that the "electronics" of the boxes somehow differ - as the valve bodies of the NP and NM models apparently differ.

I would prefer to put in a box from a 3.2DiD but cannot find one at the right price... and the NM was only built for 2 years so I struggle to find one.

See earlier in this thread for a post with bullets for the symptoms...

That was the plan.. maar my moed is besig om my te begewe... I am getting scared - but the pressure fromt his forum is quite high - so we will attempt to assemble...

c. If YES, more photos please.
Will do!

Also to diffucult for me.. I struggled because it seems there is a limit on how long an article can be... maybe some-one more clued up can help?

Re: 3.2 Did Autobox v5A51 strip
Just a thought, but have you got a full service manual for the autobox to aid with tolerances and re-assembly?

I found one (actually complete vehicle service manual) on the forum under the downloads section, its for the American Mitsubishi Montero(same as Pajero), but AFAIK it has the identical box that we have in our vehicles - v5A51 INVECS II. I am also pretty certain that the only the diff ratio's are changed for the DiD and V6 petrol models, for contruction simplicity. Here are my V6 compared to the DiD drive ratio;s in the box
3.2 did : 3.5v6
1st 3.789 : 3.789
2nd 2.057 : 2.057
3rd 1.421 : 1.421
4th 1 : 1
5th 0.731 : 0.731
Owners manual.jpg
So it looks like the boxes are identical....

Good luck!
