I noticed a high pitch whistling noise lately when pushing the engine a bit uphill, first thought the turbo has gone south but found a small leak on the exhaust manifold where a bolt fell out. So had that replaced and new gasket fitted. Noise all gone
While it was in I also took the plunge and had the catalytic converter removed. I have always been a staunch supporter of leaving any vehicle standard, engine wise, as much as possible and have never seen any need to do this before but thought that at just under 300000km that it might be "slightly" blocked.
Took it out and it sounds a bit more throaty. Feel about the same power wise. Will monitor if it makes any difference on fuel consumption.
