Handbrake repairs, DIY???
Hi all

after driving some heavy deep water and mud in Mozambique, my handbrake shoes are finished…

Anyone replaced these themselves? Been in touch with Mitsu and they want the car for the whole day :?
Another mechanic reckons they need to be taken out and reshoed (spelling) :?

Still waiting for Mitsu parts division to call me back with availability and price.

Any advice?

Hi KaiV,

I have only fitted new disc rotors and pads at rear and slave cylinder repair kits, but I did take the time to correctly adjust the handbrake too (The stealers just cheat and take up slack on the adjuster at the handbrake lever, which is not the correct procedure).

If you want to do a good job of cleaning the old parts of brake dust and ensuring everything degreased etc. I don't think it should take the average person more than a morning to replace the park brake shoes on both sides if yours is a Gen3 similar to mine.

But why would your handbrake shoes wear? I have an auto so I rarely use handbrake.

Oh, also you may find that someone did adjust your shoes at the drums and then failed to replace the rubber bungs that provide access to the start wheel adjusters. Remember to replace the bungs if they are missing.

Maybe just strip the noisiest side first and see what you are dealing with - it could be that a good clean up and adjustment will sort out the noise.

While you are in there, measure up the rotor thickness to see how close you are to needing new rotors, measure up the disc pads to see how close they are to replacement and I suggest that you clean up and regrease (red rubber grease) the pins that the calipers slides on.

KaiV.

A very easy DIY job. I echo Andrew's comments about the correct way of adjusting the handbrake.

Hi

If you really go playing in the deep stuff (ie driving through mud and water up to hip height at parts, followed my 100's of meters of mud) that stuff gets inside and just eats away everything on the inside. THis not only happens with my Paj, but also with the Colt.

Mitsu's system was down today!!! Will be doing this myself. The stripping I think is easy, will need to look into the actual setting of the system.
No noise coming from the hand brake (I never use it, unless there is a slope) but it pulls up to the top and does not hold the car.

After you strip and clean, put extra effort to ensure that the inside seating face of the rotor and the matching face that it beds against are spotlessly clean (brake part cleaner and wire brush) else the rotor will not run true and you will experience brake shudder.

Before re-assembly completely slack off the adjustment at the handbrake lever and back off the star wheel adjustment at the hub.

After assembly (and with the road wheel on and torqued to spec) start to adjust at the start wheel until it locks the hub and then back off a couple of clicks on the star wheel.

Once you have done that on both sides and the wheels are back on the ground adjust the handbrake lever to taste.
