Second hand 3.5l Gdi gen 3 - buying advice for newbie
Image Image

So i am looking at buying this gen 3 Pajero for a reasonable price. I live in Zimbabwe and have received many polarizing reviews about this car and specifically the engine. I was wondering if anyone here could provide me with some deeper insight about what i may be getting into, and if i am ready to do that at all.

The car has been inspected by 2 mechanics - both said great. 3rd mechanic didn't see the car but said avoid at all costs because the 6g74 engine is 'highly technical' and 'impossible to repair' should something go wrong, he also said the chances of something going wrong are high; namely because of the high pressure injection system the engine uses and the low quality of petrol available in this region.

Owners of the car have said this can be mitigated by uses GUD filters and fuel cleaners.

I understand the fuel quality here means there are issues with the high pressure pumps and they are 'a fortune' to replace. I also understand the car is heavy on fuel. I do not know how to contextualize these problems or if they are deal breakers.

The car has 113000km on the clock and seems to be in great shape, it was imported from Japan at 80000km.

Finding a car has been a nightmare and i am in quite a desperate spot because of how defeated i feel by the whole process. I would appreciate any feedback or advice at all, very happy to provide additional information or context. Thank you.

Hi I've run owned a 3.5 GDI for 6 years. These are some of the areas need to be aware of. Under drivers seat are heater connections, two are same size with a smaller pipe. Remove the tee pieces join the big pipes small pipe for rear heater. You don't need if tee fails goodbye engine. I've had petrol statvation faults due to micro filters inside high pressure pump. I removed these fitted an inline filter in rubber hose to pump ( I've a post on filters). Replaced timing belt water pump tensioner thermostat when first got it.If you sort these out enjoy it apart from auto flush normal yearly oil service it's done ok. I've still got use in spite of 5km a lt ouch. Feel it's more reliable than diesel.
