So i am looking at buying this gen 3 Pajero for a reasonable price. I live in Zimbabwe and have received many polarizing reviews about this car and specifically the engine. I was wondering if anyone here could provide me with some deeper insight about what i may be getting into, and if i am ready to do that at all.
The car has been inspected by 2 mechanics - both said great. 3rd mechanic didn't see the car but said avoid at all costs because the 6g74 engine is 'highly technical' and 'impossible to repair' should something go wrong, he also said the chances of something going wrong are high; namely because of the high pressure injection system the engine uses and the low quality of petrol available in this region.
Owners of the car have said this can be mitigated by uses GUD filters and fuel cleaners.
I understand the fuel quality here means there are issues with the high pressure pumps and they are 'a fortune' to replace. I also understand the car is heavy on fuel. I do not know how to contextualize these problems or if they are deal breakers.
The car has 113000km on the clock and seems to be in great shape, it was imported from Japan at 80000km.
Finding a car has been a nightmare and i am in quite a desperate spot because of how defeated i feel by the whole process. I would appreciate any feedback or advice at all, very happy to provide additional information or context. Thank you.
